Shrub about 5 ft tall. Branchlets glabrous or closely pubescent. Leaves cordate-oblong, obovate, acute, 5-7 x 2-3 cm across, petiole, 0.5-1 cm long, coriaceous glabrous or nearly so rarely villous beneath, lateral nerves glabrous or pilose or villous beneath. Flowers spikes axillary, short, often panicled about 1-1.5 cm long, floral leaves gradually reduced, sometimes minutely pilose above, the upper most lanceolate, sessile, bracts 1-3 mm long, lanceolate, bracteoles reduced minute. Calyx glabrous, Calyx tube somewhat glauxous, rarely slightly hairy, teeth about 0.2 mm lanceolate. Corolla glabrous, Corolla tube about 1.2 cm long, rarely with few scattered hairs, hairy within. Stamens 5 about the same length of the corolla, Ovaries hairy, free; style exserted with scattered hairs or glabrous; fruit berries about 1.2 cm across, ellipsoid, red, black when fully ripe.

Flowering/Fruiting: May-October.
