Can you please indicate the size of leaves. To me they appear much larger than ones expected for S. decumbens. Also can you bring out number of styles clearly.

Leaf length 10 cm and width 4 cm… unfortunately could not get the flowers.. some grasscutter had been at work… 🙁

So my fears were true, it can’t be Stellaria decumbens which does not have more than 1 cm long leaves

Stellaria monosperma Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don var. monosperma is a wide spread temperate and alpine herb in Western and Nepal Himalaya. Though widespread I photographed it first time in this tour to Vasudhara from Badrinath in Sept. 2013.
Flowers are tiny, 5-8mm across only.

Not Stellaria, It appears to be a Cerastium species. Kindly crop and upload flower upper view from first photograph to count the number of styles.

… unfortunately no view of fruit in my photos. And I have a feeling that my perception of flower size: 8 – 10 mm across could be on higher side. It could be 6 – 7 mm, though not sure.

Yes, the flower diameter was nearly 1 cm or less …but petals are quite distinct in mine..I request … and … to upload some better views of the same … may not be able to do this at the moment as he is out at Calicut, … can help..

Seems Stellaria monosperma var. paniculata (Caryophyllaceae).
Interesting find and fine pictures showing bifid petals clearly.

After seeing an upload by …, I also wanted to share one similar looking plant shot during our recent trip to Gori valley..in October 2012.

Yes It is the same plant. Please upload cropped image of flower from original to have a look at number of styles. Plus try to locate a mature fruit to help reaching some conclusion.

Styles 3, petal notch almost triangular, linear-lanceolate leaves, I could not match with any known species. Perhaps a good project for you … on your next visit. Do collect some specimens and more hotographs especially of fruits.

Col. Collett refers to this as S. crispata but the name has changed since to S. monosperma. Please validate.

I usually start with Flora Simlensis and Flowers of the Himalaya by Polunin and Stainton if I have an idea about family/ genus. Otherwise I go to FOI and check … blog. If this too fails I ask for expert advice here.

Stellaria paniculata Edgew. (S. monosperma var. paniculata) to me. More recently there is one another species S. devendrae which is also closer to S. monosperma and S. paniculata.

Thank you … I took it from Col. Collett’s Flora Simlensis in which he says that S. crispata has ‘margins often crisped’. Otherwise the description is almost identical. What characteristic made you suspect it was var. paniculata? Kindly advise.

These two varieties are considered as two different species now.

Thank you … Looking at the sepal-petal relationship it most definitely is S. paniculata as suggested by you. Col Collett had suggested that S. crispata has two varieties—one with longer sepals, another with shorter, and treats S. paniculata as a different species (hence the confusion).

Thank you …, Looking at the number of stamens, it does match the var. monosperma for which Flora of China gives the former name as S. crispata that matches Col. Collett’s description too.
