Sharing pictures of Combretaceae Terminalia catappa Indian almond at Pune
Last month I had posted the pictures of this tree when the leaves were green. Now they have started turning red and also produced fruits .

The tree shed leaves twice in a year, and change of colour of the leaves reminds the fall season in cold countries, when most of the trees (broad leaved) fall down after changing colour.

Date/Time-Oct 2011
Location-Place, Altitude, GPS-Pune
Habitat- Garden/ Urban/ Wild/ Type-Wild
Plant Habit-Tree/ Shrub/ Climber/ Herb- Herb
Height/Length- about 3 cms
Leaves Type/ Shape/ Size- green rectangular about 5cms by 2.5 cms
no flowers or fruits seen

… new shoot of saplings are interesting, like the one you are showing.
The leaves (or leaflets) are often different from what are seen on a matured plant.

I think these are first leaves of the sapling of Terminalia catappa.
Family: Combretaceae

Yes around my house there are many Terminalia catappa trees.

This is really an interesting thread. I am proud that our members can id plants even in the stage of just two juvenile leaves 🙂

My boss can even id from fruits, passing through guts and coming out of butts from ungulates :P.. Even from terrestrial turtles….I always keep scratching my head, how he does it.
Buts its all experience.

I was talking abt … He is now at ICIMOD, Kathmandu

Almond for ID:
This almond is locally known as badam. There seems to be various species for almond.
Photo taken at Gadwal, Andhra Pradesh on 14.06.2012 at a guest house
What is this species.

Terminalia catappa L. of Combretaceae family.

Yes, Terminalia catappa.
The fruits are relished by fruit bats and they help in dispersing the seeds widely.

Of course not to be confused with real almond or badam, which is Prunus amygalus Batsch (syn: p. dulcis (Mill.) Webb.)
this is Indian Almond-tree, desi badam (Hindi), Bangla badam (Beng.), Badamuchettu (Tel), Natvadam (Tam.).

It is called Kaadu badami In kannada, in taste it is slightly bitter.

Attached are pictures of Terminalia catappa growing by the roadside in Mumbai in September 2012.
We as children used to collect the fruits fallen on the ground early morning and eat them just so that we could eat the seeds inside the tough kernel.

Very true … One of my favorite fruits.
We used to climb the trees too… but those days are long gone.

Are the seeds edible?

Yes, … We used to eat them thinking that they were really ‘बदाम’, for us children, they were thinner बदामs

Requesting to please ID this big tree growing in a cultivated garden in Goa in May 2015.
Leaves looked like Terminalia catappa but were much larger. Also the branching pattern looked different.
Is this Terminalia catappa only?

This is the Badam or Indian/ Bengal Almond tree [Terminalia catappa]. It is a native of the Moluccas and the Andaman Islands and is often cultivated in gardens.

Yes, T.catappa
