Herbs. Leaves to 9 x 1 cm, lanceolate, apex acute, base slightly cordate, sheath to 2 cm, open, long ciliate. Cymes axillary; peduncles to 5 cm, spathe 4.5 x 2 cm, broadly ovate, acuminate, base cordate; outer sepals 5 mm, cucullate; inner 2, smaller; petals 9 mm, obovate; filaments 8 mm, hairy; ovary 2 mm, style 6 mm, stigma globose. Commelina clavata occurs in Sri Lanka, Indo-China to West Malaysia including Indonesia. In India Madhya Pradesh (Bastar), Maharasthra (Raigad) and Tamil Nadu (Coimbatore, Kanniyakumari, Madurai, Nilgiri, Salem, Tiruchchirappalli, Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram and Tiruvannamalai). In the Gulf of Mannar the species occurs in Mainland coast (Mathew 1991, Cook 1996, Daniel and Umamaheswari 2001).
