This is again from an earlier thread
This also cannot be C. diffusa as in my previous thread

This is also C. longifolia Lam.

commelina from Hooghly 22-Nov-12 sk:
I have recorded photographs of commelina today. These herbs are growing in ditches along a rural roadside. Those ditches are also used as irrigation channel to paddy fields on the both sides of the road.

I am not sure if all pictures are from the same Commelina species.
I have recorded all within a distance of 100m and marked them as series “c1”, “c2”, “c3” & “c4”.
Please note, four pics, marked as “c2_x”, “c2_x2”, “c2_x3” & “c2_x4” are from a plant on the dirt road and rest are from ditches, with or without water.
Species : UNKNOWN
H & H : slender long procumbent herb with branches
Date : 22/11/12
Place : Hooghly

It must be Commelina diffusa Burm.f. as per discussion in another thread

I now realize that i have made a lot of confusion in this post/thread. Certainly some pictures are of C. diffusa Burm.f., as explained by … in another thread.
Not sure of all pictures. Next time i will try to find seed and capsules also, as per the discussion in the link above.

…, none of the attached pics in this thread is C. diffusa Burm. f.
I think there are two species here, one is C. attenuata Koen. ex Vahl (please note deeply cordate spathe in c1_7642.jpg) and the other is C. hasskarlii C. B. Clarke.

Please read C. longifolia Lam. in place of C. hasskarlii (for the larger flower of about 2.5 cm across).
Attached here a pic which I think shows capsules (3 capsules) and a flower. I do not find much info on C. attenuata except http://www.eflorakkl.in/Details.php?id=400. Since capsules here seem to have 2 cells each and cymes more than 2 flowered I think it is probably C. attenuata Koen. ex Vahl.

sk2015sept06/06 – unlikely to be Commelina diffusa Burm.f. : 6 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (4)
This set is from my earlier thread of C. diffusa Burm.f.
FoC specifies 2 longer petals blue, 4.2-6 mm. Here they seem to be larger than that.
FoNA specifies proximal petal smaller. Here all petals equal, at least not smaller.
A similar looking one was identified as C. longifolia in a flickr acc – https://www.flickr.com/photos/haile/2384267981/in/photostream/
On Roxburgh’s C. salicifolia (C. longifolia Lam. of BSI) Haines wrote “petals equal except that the lower has a shorter claw.” Haines also wrote flowers are smaller than in “nudiflora(C. diffusa Burm. f.).
On C. hasskarlii C.B. Cl., Haines recorded, “close to C. salicifolia, differing by the broader leaves, inflated sheaths, less acuminate spathes rarely over .8 inch…. .”
KEW has a herbarium of C. hasskarlii from UP – http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getImage.do?imageBarcode=K000794517
Can it be C. hasskarlii C.B.Cl. of my table?

I think this species is C. longifolia Lam.

This one looks like Commelina longifolia

commelina in canal from Hooghly 17/11/12 sk:  7 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (8)
Of the 20 species of Commelina described in The F. B. I., vol6., p369-374; only three species – C. sikkimensis Clarke, C. salicifolia Roxb.; C. appendiculata Clarke have spathes more than One and a Half inch.
The fourth one C. undulata Br. doesn’t have any spathe size mentioned in the book, but do have leaves between 4-5 in. And it has been mentioned as a slight variety of C. obliqua.
I do not have stats on leaf size of this species (it was not possible to measure it), but comparing the spathe size with that of leaves, i think my species has leaves of bigger than 15 cm x 1 cm.
We can leave C. sikimensis (leaves 2-3 in x 1/4-1/3 in).
Which of the above three is my species? Or should i go for an exotic one?
Species : UNKNOWN
H & H : wild herb in a canal, prostrate, partly erect, growing along with water hyacinth on water surface.

Posted Commelina, is I think Commelina diffusa Burm. f. Fl. Ind. 13. t. 7. f. 2. 1768. [=C. nudiflora of Moon, Cat. 5. 1824; Hook. f., Fl. Br. India, 6: 369. 1892. non L., 1753]. ID based on field (in vegetative) observations of mine, I may be wrong (seeds 5, not appendaged, testa reticulate are the few key chr. to ID the species).
Commelina appendiculata is having spathes of 5 to 10 cm long, 2 to 2.5 cm wide flowers, (seeds 2-3, with appendages, testa smooth)
I personally do not find any qualitative differences in C. sikkimensis & C. diffusa.
And C. undulata is with fused spathes at margins. And the posted plant is with spathes free on margins.

Spathes length, pubescence is vary according the environment, so it could be difficult to judge the species, basis of quantitative characters. Seed and Capsule characters are play important role in species differentiation at least in genus Commelina.

Thank you very much … for the ID & keys to Commelina.
So, it is the same species as in my earlier uploads at efi thread 1 and at efi thread 2. As for sizes of spathes i must add that flower sizes also vary, because the flowers in my first upload (in the 1st link) is smaller than the rest.
I hope Commelina diffusa Burm. f. Fl. Ind. 13. t. 7. f. 2. 1768. is the same as – C. diffusa, Burm. Fl. Ind. 18, t. 7, f. 2. as in the attached screenshot of part of F. B. I. vi. 369. or – Commelina diffusa N. L. Burman, Fl. Indica. 18, plate 7, fig. 2. 1768. at FoC.

Here is the attached screenshot. Attachments (1)
