–  We prepare upama like dish of it for fast called kis. … may remember Aashadhi Ekadashi fast of her childhood. There is some Ipomea called Jangali ratalu. The tribals love it. We planted these near a rainharvesting pond. It grew and spread nicely. One fine day all plants were uprooted. It was a terrible site. All ratalus were eaten.
What is that variety. Leaves similar to your photo but smaller and slight redish tinge on stem.

-Adding my picture of Sweet Potato flower to your pictures.

– remember many things of my childhood made of ratala. At my grandfathers place we used to make “handi”, an earthen pot filled with ratalas put in the charcoal fire for some time. these then we used to eat with milk and gul. Mouthwatering. In germany we get very rarely ratala. The only indian shop in Bremen is 25 km away and so less chance of eating ratala these days. i don’t know, if i can grow them in my garden. How are they grown? seeds?

-I will let you know. But if I am not mistaken it is a creeper so cuttings are planted. Details will inquire and let you know. But one thing I know that when I visit you in Germany I can carry ratalas as gift.

I admit that i collected this tuber of Ipomoea batatas from a local bazaar. Is it eligible to post in the upcoming ‘Convolvulaceae week’?

Garden Creeper for ID : 230711 : AK-3:
Taken on the 14th of April, 2008 at Racca Nursery,Nasik.
A small garden creeper, cultivated.
No flowers seen.
Is it Ivy creeper?

Looks more like an Ipomoea sp. rather than a Hedera sp.

Ipomoea batatas
Family: Convolvulaceae
Sweet Potato Vine

Yea, could be ipomea batatas with variegated leaves that develop pink to red tinges…
have seen some in southern states as street plantings in recent times…
though for your plant better wait and see if it flowers… i. batatas will have pink-mauve ipomea like flowers with deep reddish/pink center…
Though variegated ivy is well known, never seen one with pinkish/reddish tinge… but never say never…
One way right now…is to look and feel the leaves… batatas leaves are somewhat softer than Ivy leaves,
which in turn are some what leathery to feel…
and leaf pedicle is longer in batatas than in ivy, at least in colder climes…
do not know what happens in the tropics with high humidity…

Yes I also have that doubt. …, can you share another photograph showing general habit of the plant.

Yes may be Ipomoea batatas

Sweet Potato
Today brought a similar vine from a nursery.
They called this as Shakarkand ki Bel.

I have only the above picture of this creeper.
Will try and take some more during next visit.

Ipomoea batatas pink frost

Even if you cant take the pic, you can dig it out and enjoy the sweet potato :). Thats another way to confirm 😛

Ornamental Climber for ID : Lalbagh,Bangalore : 210113 : AK-2:
Saw these small plants with purple leaves at Lalbagh, in Bangalore on 25/7/2012.
Leaves look like Ipomoea but I have not seen Ipomoea with purple leaves.
These were young plants, not yet fully grown.
Can our experts identify these?

its sweet potato vine
google images will show you chartruese green or purple leaves
good as indoor in water only cuttings, roots easily and looks good on the table with a lottle soil or only water…

Thanks for this id.
Searching shows one Ipomoea ‘Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Purple’ with heart shaped leaves..
Athough normal Sweet Potato leaves are different
Experts kindly validate.

what is “Normal”. there is no normal… when the world is only a click away.
what is “normal” in Bengal is not in Bihar or Punjab or mexico or panama where most of these come from etc
and if you google image search
you’ll see the ipomea batata black heart … there are at least three different…very different leaf shapes…
and each plant at different length of lifespan produces almost the same looking tuber…
I should know I have grown all the three major leaf shapes thinking they were different somehow…. but to look at they were the same
I did not eat them though
anyway interesting

Kannada names and English transliteration are correct !.

Want to correct name in Santali Language.
Sakarkenda
In Santali we also call it as:
ᱵᱚᱥᱮᱨ ᱟᱹᱲᱩ Boser adu; Sakarkenda is not much called but its transcription in Santali would be ᱥᱟᱹᱠᱟᱹᱨᱠᱮᱸᱫᱟ

Thanks very very much … for validating the popular name, and as well as for the native name, both in native script.
Will soon incorporate them in my notes/ blog.

For me it looks Kannada names and English transliteration are correct.

This is a common crop cultivated here, very tasty, favourite to kids and available for Rs.35-40/kg.
Here ‘kilangu’ in English is Tamil pronunciation and the correct Malayalam spelling for കിഴങ്ങ് is kizhangu means tuber or rhizome. So the correct Malayalam spelling are

one more മരക്കിഴങ്ങ് Marakkizhangu
