Requesting to please ID this plant growing wild by the roadside in Mumbai in October 2013. The flowers had a faint purple throat as compared to some other flowers in the area having a deep purple throat.

This too is Ipomoea marginata. Leaf shape and flower colour is variable. Also note the purple blotches on the leaves in your third photograph [3-DSC09085.jpg].

Thanks, …, Taxonomy of this seems confused as can be seen at Ipomoea sagittifolia (which is the accepted name as per GRIN recently updated)

Ipomoea marginata (high degree of certainty)
note – Leaves of Ipomoea marginata do not always show purple pigmentation
………………………….
I would like to request that clear sideviews showing the outer tube of the bloom , sepals and fruit (at any and all stages) be included when this is available as all of the aforementioned parts are important for Convolvulaceae identification.

Thank you

Thank you Sir!. (That means) The attached pictures are all of Ipomea grandiflora!?. Photographed at Thane and Mira Road (Maharashtra). During the month of September – November 2014. Attachments (5)

No, Madam, not all plates belong to Ipomoea grandifolia (I. grandiflora is a different taxon).
But, first I would like to draw your attention to an earlier thread. relating to nomenclature of I grandifolia and I. trilobaefi  thread. Please check what Ron thinks of I. grandifolia – http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/128497/. The problem is earlier both were synonymous, as in –
Your plate no. 11-2014_1437504611381 is the species above, and may be plate no. 20141113_145600 (the seeds) also.
Plate 20141024_095956, plate 20141102_072405, plate 20141029_1437525411766 = Ipomoea marginata (Desr.) Verdc.

Plate 20140918_130641 and plate 20140918_130755 = possibly Ipomoea nil (L.) Roth., but I am not sure, for there are other taxa like I. indica (Burm.) Merr.

Thank you for providing a detailed information and help in identifying (even though the plant pictures were not of same species). So, it concludes that the attached (set of) images includes:  Ipomea grandifolia (syn. I. triloba), I. marginata, I. nil or I. indica (possibly)

Yes, …, this what I think. But, we should wait for further comments from other members as well. For … have more experience with convolvulaceae diversity across our country.

To identify a convolvulaceae flower size, corolla tube and sepal view is absolutely essential.
However you may try /species/a—l/cl/convolvulaceae/ipomoea/ipomoea-marginata, earlier Ipomoea marginata.

Ipomoea sagittifolia (syn. Ipomoea marginata (Desr.) Manitz), it it sure ?

It is Ipomoea marginata (Desr.) Verdc.

Ipomoea marginata syn. Ipomoea sepiaria to me too.

Convolvulaceae Week: Ipomoea sp. from Hooghly (WB):

I thought it was some other species, not an Ipomoea aquatica. The reasoning behind my anticipation was –

a) It is a twining climber found on roadside having ditches beside it. But a point to be noted is that those ditches are entirely dry

b) The leaf blade is significantly broader and there is  variation in blade-shapes

c) Stem is narrower and hairy

d) Stamens protrude outside of the corolla

e) Anthers are purple

f) Flowers are a tad smaller and appearance of the flower is a bit pentagonal than a perfect round shape

Having been suggested by … i too think now that it is also a Ipomoea aquatica, maybe slightly modified due to terrestrial adaptation.

Yet a google search leads me to the following websites that contain similar leaves and flowers with very minute variations. Of-course wiki says that this plant is from North America! :-

1. http://www.discoverlife.org/mp/20q?search=Ipomoea+pandurata

2. Link

3. http://www.arbolesornamentales.es/Ipomoea.htm

Species : Ipomoea sp.

Habit : wild twiner with hairy stem

Habitat : roadside

Date : 07-Mar-2012, 12-Mar-2012

Place : Gobra (Hooghly), West Bengal

Ipomoea marginata (Desr.) Verdc.

nice logical steps… but wrong… since you  might be very familiar with Kalmi saag…. did you never doubt your own analysis???   … esp that of the stem…. and its presence or absence of hollow tube like nature of the stem… and the shape etc of the leaf, even before on analyses the flower????
Kalmi saag is Ipomea aquatica, as far as I know…
Correct me if that is not so…

I admit that i acted like a fool. But this identification science is new to me and having a degree in Bio-science doesn’t help me to ID anything to the slightest degree. Moreover, I was/am an average student, a slow learner. It takes me much time to gather all data and find a relation between the each collected bit.

Yes, Madam, i was familiar with ‘Kalmi saag’ but that was on the lunch table! As for the daily bazaar, my brother takes care of that!

I think … has rightly picked up the purple colour which is present on the margins or centre of the leaves of this species. Of course other characters like deeply cordate base of the leaves; purple flower with dark throat and the calyx4-6mm also corresponds well.

can anybody help in identification of this plant of family convolvulaceae

Thanks, … Pl. check with comparative images at Ipomoea

images of ipomoea on the website doesn’t match this species.
can anybody help in identification of this ipomoea species ?

Could be Ipomoea sepiaria (syn of Ipomoea marginata)

I also agree with … as it appears close to images at Ipomoea sagittifolia (Syn. (=) Convolvulus marginatus Desr.; (=) Ipomoea marginata (Desr.) Manitz; (=) Ipomoea maxima auct.; (=) Ipomoea sepiaria J. Koenig ex Roxb.);

Thanks for replying sir.
But it’s flowers are infundibuliform, seeds are glabrous, dark brown to black in color.
I think it’s not Ipomoea sagittifolia because these characters are not in Ipomoea sagittifolia

It’s Ipomoea marginata only

But sir it’s seeds are smooth not hairy.

Ipomoea sagittifolia seeds are not hairy, they are smooth, testa very finely reticulate.
Posted flowers are definitely Ipomoea sagittifolia.

Ipomoea?? 241110-PKA1:
I had come across this climber at the outskirts of Mumbai.

Date/Time: 22-11-2010 / 08:50AM
Location: Mumbai
Habitat: Wild
Plant Habit: Climber
Flower: Corolla: 2cm dia, Corolla tube 1cm, Pedicel:  8mm
Leaf: Petiole 2 cm, leaf lobed 5 cm long.

 – This seems to be I. marginata but purple blotches on leaf are missing.

Blotches on leaves, flower size or number of flowers are not the key characters for I. marginata. Sepals obtuse, corolla hypocrateriform and seeds with long hairs are the key characters. In the present situation it looks to be I. marginata unless you find anything contarary.

– I think the plant in question is likely to be Ipomoea marginata, although I have some reservations.

Ipomoea marginata may have hairs on the leaves and stems or it may be glabrous.
The leaf shape may be cordate or can vary to an almost sagittate shape.
The purple blotches are not a requirement and are likely a response to intense sunlight or other environmental factors.
I do see a difference in the coloration in the tube and throat which I see as atypical in addition to a difference in the length and taper of the tube.
The corolla measurements and tube characteristics are always important whether mentioned as a key characteristic by any author or not…some contemplation on this might be in order…
I also notice that the petiole on this plant has some stoloniferous protrusions (most visible in the 4th photo) that are worthy of notice and are not often seen in photos Ipomoea marginata.

Flora of Andaman30- 100111-PKA1:
I had seen this Climber near Corbyns Cove Beach (Port Blair, Andaman). Date/Time: 18-12-2010 / 03:00PM
Habitat: Wild
Plant Habit: Climber.  I could not spot any flowers / fruits.

 – I think it of value to compare the plant which is the subject of this thread with the plant in the following thread here
Convolvulaceae for id from Tirupati-280111-1

– … to me the fruits’ picture IMG_1938.jpg … reminds of Ipomoea marginata.
Got a photo at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dinesh_valke/3936039105/
Not sure if some other Convolvulaceae member(s) bear(s) similar fruit.

– The fruit does seem to match very well with the Ipomoea marginata.
The leaves in the above photos are more cordate and I think it is good to keep this in mind when considering other plants that may be Ipomoea marginata.
There are also some leaves as in photo 1939 which are larger , much darker colored and more elongated and I was considering these leaves in the potential differential ID , although as .. has already indicated the fruit does (at this point) appear identical to Ipomoea marginata , so unless there is some additional information forthcoming from the plant in question I would agree on an ID of Ipomoea marginata.

Ipomoea marginata but not sure in absence of sizes of leaves and corolla.

What is visible of the seedpods and the corolla profile in the background flowers also matches Ipomoea marginata.

Convolvulaceae ID :: 07/March/2012 :: Hooghly (WB) SK:
Is this Ipomoea aquatica or some Convolvulus sp. ?

Type : wild creeper
Date : 07-March-2012, 10 A.M.
Place : Hooghly, West Bengal
I do not have any closer photo of the leaves of this plant.

It was so confusing. The flowers were quite like I. aquatica but the leaves were a bit different. I have more images Ipomoea aquatica shot in February, 2012, but in those images leaves are very elongated and narrow. I am trying to upload one shortly.

… identified it as Ipomoea marginata (Desr.) Verdc. in this ongoing “Convovulaceae Week” at efi thread

To my mind it is Ipomoea marginata… despite purple blotches not present on leaves , the corolla and sepals match I.marginata.

Thank you for confirming the same. And, yes, there is no purple blotches on leaves, i checked it again this morning at different places where these plants can be seen in full bloom now.

I once posted this suspected Ipomoea plant sample but without much description and much couldn’t be done on it. Now i am re posting it with more info.please help me with the identification.
The three pdf files contain the pictures of the plant, gotten from the southern part of Nigeria. And we are in the middle of the rainy season.
1. The first pdf file shows the plant in its natural habitat
2. The second file shows the flower and flower buds.
·         The width of mature flower ranges from 2.8cm-3.5cm
·         While that of the length is 2cm-3cm
·         The petal is white with purple inner color inside the funnel
·         The sepals after removing the petal
3. The third file shows the different leaf shapes gotten from the same plant and from different plant stands in the same area.
·         The petiole ranges from 5cm-11.5cm for mature
·         Peduncle , about 2.5cm
·         Internode…8.5cm-10cm
Note. Use the zoom for better and clear view

This must be Ipomoea sepiaria Koenig ex Roxb. … synonym of Ipomoea marginata (Desr.) Verdc.

The plant is Ipomoea sagittifolia (syn. Ipomoea marginata, Ipomoea sepiaria) and all parts in the photos supplied are consistent for Ipomoea sagittifolia, even though the photos of the sepals could be clearer, the structure and verruculose surface is visible.
The description provided does not coincide with what is visible in the photos regarding the length of the petioles.
The description provided gives a length of from 5cm-11.5cm for mature.
What I see in the photos supplied in much more consistent with the official descriptions and treatments which state a petiole length of from 1 to 4 cm…

I really appreciate. That description was what I could get from the field. The variable nature of the plant made me to snap different leaves, So one can appreciate what I am saying. Secondly, I found it where there’s much water and there’s been much rain around here. Who knows, the environment could be contributing significantly too.
But out of all those synonyms, which name should I pick, which one is most widely accepted?

For ID – 21/01/2023 DS 3: 1 image.
I need help with the Ipomea’s – on how best to study them for ID.
I found this one close to home, Ahmedabad, and those pointy leaves with the wavy edges seem to be very different or do young leaves look like this? The beautiful flower has a soft pink centre. It was growing along with Peritrophe, Cassia sophera amongst Prospis juliflora.

I think there is mix up of plants. Make sure the leaves you mentioned are those of the one with Ipoemea flowers. Please post a separate picture of the flowers attached to leaves by separating the plant from other plant species.
In the present form it is confusing.

Could be bindweed (Convulvulus) climbing on another plant

Leaves and side view of flower is missing, for I’d.

I find it very interesting that the climber has these different types of leaves. When large, they have that purple centre and the leaf margin is smooth. While there are also these other type, where the terminal portion is gracefully long and the leaf margin is serrated.
Do all ipomea have this kind of development or just ipomea sagittifolia ?

I do not think all Ipomeas have this kind of development as in ipomea sagittifolia ?
