Kalatope flowers id AL053112:  Another flower for id from Kalatope…
Location Kalatope, Chamba
Altitude 2100 mts
Habit Shrub
Habitat wild
Season May
Height 4 feet

A Solanaceae member?

May be a species of Acnistus of Solanaceae family?

It looks like Elaeagnus sp. of Elaeagnaceae to me. Probably E. umbellata.

Yes Elaeagnus umbellata, very profusely flowering in NW Himalayas in May

Thanks … and … for the correction.

Yes the leaves looked like Eleagnus but the longer flowers made me confused (2nd picture).
But I should have noticed the 4 lobed corolla (in Solanaceae it is 5 lobed).

Elaeagnus parviflora ABMAY01/01 : 4 posts by 2 authors.
Strolling about the other evening I came across this untidy shrub near my home. It was growing above a retaining wall with difficult access and I only managed to collect a twig with leaves and flowers. The tiny flowers with square stems had a sickly sweet scent. I went back the next morning with my camera and photograph the shrub. My research shows it to be Elaeagnus parviflora. Please advise.
I will look out for the edible fruit.

This shrub was shot from Chakrata area, I hope this is a Lycium sp., wanted to know the specific id..
If Lycium, is this L. chinense

The corolla is 4-lobed here..

Seems to me as Elaeagnus parvifolia (Elaeagnaceae) if wild.

Thanks …, you are always at rescue…
Yes, this was wild and your id seems to be correct…

Elaeagnus umbellata- Gyain, Guan, Giyayin a sweet-sour edible fruit bearing shrub.

I think E. umbellata only. In E. parvifolia petals are yellow inside and leaves much more greener on upper surface.

Thanks … and … for your valuable inputs…

I could not find difference/ keys between Elaeagnus parvifolia Wall. and Elaeagnus umbellata C. P. Thunb. ex A. Murray, as two appears quite close on net.

Flora of Pakistan only lists Elaeagnus umbellata with distribution as Japan, Assam, China, Afghanistan and the Himalayas from Kashmir to Bhutan. Flora of China also only lists this species with distribution as Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Japan, Korea, Nepal; naturalized in North America.

Flora of Bhutan also only mentions only Elaeagnus parvifolia Wall. ex Royle & not Elaeagnus umbellata Thunb.
Also, Catalogue of Life gives distribution of Elaeagnus parvifolia Wall. as Bhutan, Chumbi, India, Nepal, while for Elaeagnus umbellata C. P. Thunb. ex A. Murray, it gives distribution as China (Anhui, Fujian, Gansu, Guizhou, Hebei, Hubei, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Liaoning, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Shandong, Shanxi, Sichuan, Yunnan, Zhejiang), Taiwan, Tibet, Cambodia, Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu), South Korea, North Korea, Myanmar [Burma], Thailand, Pakistan (Kurram, Swat, Hazara, Murree), Jammu & Kashmir (Kashmir, Poonch), Pakistani Kashmir (Mirpur), ….

In view, I am taking this as Elaeagnus parvifolia Wall.

sir, Visually attachment looks like Elaeagnus umbellata; wherteas OTHER 4 atttachments resemble to Elaeagnus parviflora.

E. parviflora Wall. is now known as E. angustifolia var. orientalis. E. angustifolia var. angustifolia is easily differentiated from E. umbellata by being mostly a tree, leaves greyish on both surfaces, narrower less than 1.5 cm broad, style glabrous, endocarp neither ribbed nor woolly. var orientalis being found in Western Himalayas is difficult to differentiate from E. umbellata in leaves being greenish above, and up to 3 cm broad like latter, but differentiated by glabrous style endocarp not ribbed, larger fruit 1.5 to 2 cm long (in E. umbellata leaves greenish above, up to 3 cm broad, style hairy, endocarp ribbed, fruit 8-9 mm long)

Thanks, …,
Catalogue of life gives distribution of Elaeagnus angustifolia subsp. orientalis (L.) Sojak as Northern Caucasus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia [Caucasus], Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan (Jawzjan / Sar-e-Pol, Kunar / Nuristan), Pakistan (Kurram, Waziristan, Swat), Pakistani Kashmir (Astor, Gilgit), Jammu & Kashmir (Ladakh), Costa Rica (I), China (Gansu, Nei Mongol), Siberia

Elaeagnus indica from Pacchaimalai hills: Very interesting plant Elaeagnus indica found under Nothopegia colebrookiana–Diospyros ovalifolia –Psydrax dicoccos series in Peria shola Reserve Forest (Evergreen Forest) in Pacchaimalai hills. It is situated to the north of Turaiyur taluk of Tiruchirappalli districts, TN. Fruits of this plant also used by tribes for edible and medicinal purposes.

On examination, I feel it does not matches with Elaeagnus indica Serv. as per high resolution specimens at GBIF & Flora of peninsular India
I find it closer to Elaeagnus parvifolia Wall. ex Royle as per comparative images, details and references herein.
(but I do not know whether this has earlier been reported from South India)

The ID matches with flowersofindia posting at: Flowers of India. Nevertheless post the habit picture, foliage side view of the flowers for proper ID.

Pl. post side view of the flowers for proper id validation.

May be as per Elaeagnus parvifolia Wall. ex Royle from Batote and Kashmir in J & K

But can not be confirmed without seeing the side view of the flowers.

Some Elaeagnus sp. (Family: Elaeagnaceae).

Could this be Elaeagnus umbellata??

Please check Elaeagnus umbellata Thunb

Fruits of Elaeagnus umbellata, locally known as Ghayeen in H.P., are quite tasty.
