Euphorbiaceae week – Euphorbia caducifolia:
Euphorbia caducifolia Haines, Indian Forester 1914, xl. 154. @ Khargar Hills on 20-02-11.

–  Attaching the type specimen. Keeping the size larger than normal so that the sketches are seen.

– I doubt ..’s plant being E. caducifolia. This can be verified from careful comparison with type specimen attached by .. and the following links http://www.flickr.com/photos/jvblogger/3327843177/ <http://www.flickr.com/photos/jvblogger/3327843177/>
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Euphorbia_caducifolia
<http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Euphorbia_caducifolia>

    E. caducifolia is more like E. nivulia in stem without angles, differentiated from latter in absence of distinct trunk with branches arising from base, smaller leaves (3-8 cm long) and longer spines 0.5-1 cm (leaves 10-25 cm long, spines shorter than 0.5 cm in E. nivulia).
To me the above plants appears E. neriifolia with spirally arranged spines on low angles.

– the above plant appears E. neriifolia with spirally arranged spines on low angles….though I have never seen the flowers or fruits

– A couple of more images attached, hope you enjoy viewing them.

euphorbia antiquorum:
euphorbia antiquorum
popularly used as a fence

But to me it looks like E. neriifolia. Let’s hear from others too.

Yes, I also had that thinking, though looking slightly different. spines on older branches should help. Does not look like E. antiquorum.

Looked at some images on the net, it does look like nerifolia. Would be happy for a confirmation.

spirally arranged spines suggest Euphorbia neriifolia

Euphorbia neriifolia L. -widely cultivated

Kas week: AK25092011: Euphorbia royleana: mixed thread: 1 correct image.
Euphorbia royleana from Kas plateau.

The second picture looks stemless, and it could be of Euphorbia fusiformis (E. acaulis).

Even the first one I think is not E. royleana in which angles are winged and wings run straight. It should be E. neriifolia in which edges are not winged and angles bearing spines run spirally

QUERY :: Kannada name(s) of Euphorbia neriifloia L.:
Is malkalli = ಮಾಲಿಕಳ್ಳಿ OR ಮಲೆಕಳ್ಳಿ OR yet else ?
Ref: Medicinal Herbs Garden (PDF)
Are ಗೊಟಕಳ್ಳಿ gotakalli OR ಗೊಟಗಳ್ಳಿ gotagalli … valid names for Euphorbia neriifolia ?

Went through the pdf you have attached.
For Euphorbia neriifolia, Kannada name given here is “Malekalli“, which can be written as ಮಾಲೆಕಳ್ಳಿ.
And there is NO name as ಗೊಟಕಳ್ಳಿ ( gotakalli ) OR ಗೊಟಗಳ್ಳಿ ( gotagalli ) for the same, in Western Karnataka, at least.

Many thanks … for … ಮಾಲೆಕಳ್ಳಿ malekalli.
I made typos in Kannada names as well as English transcribed names …
They should be ಗೂಟಕಳ್ಳಿ (gutakalli) OR ಗೂಟಗಳ್ಳಿ (gutagalli).
gutakalli is a name (also) for another species of Euphorbia at ENVIS / FRLHT (Euphorbia nivulia Buch.-Ham.)

Great compilation …
… There is one interesting thing in the nomenclature.
Euphorbia neriifolia L. and Euphorbia nivulia Buch.-Ham. are surely distict two species.
But there is one Euphorbia neriifolia Roxb. [notice the change in authority] which is a SYNONYM of Euphorbia nivulia Buch.-Ham.
So, name “Malekalli“, (ಮಾಲೆಕಳ್ಳಿ) you can assign for Euphorbia neriifolia L.
And ಗೂಟಕಳ್ಳಿ (gutakalli) OR ಗೂಟಗಳ್ಳಿ (gutagalli) for Euphorbia nivulia Buch.-Ham. (Synonym Euphorbia neriifolia Roxb)
I believe, the plant authorities are not mere suffix, but decides the Authenticity of the plant material.

Fantastic help with this clarification. Thank you very much

Perhaps a longer branch should help in confirmation. E. neriifolia has flowers and spines borne on a ridged stem. This looks like E. caducifolia.

My earlier mail with key

If you have an another photo of the whole stem, It will add to the confirmation of the ID.
And based on its habit, there is an equal chance for Euphorbia nivulia Buch.-Ham. if its a small tree and spines are very short. This species is very common around Harishchandragad.
Or else, Euphorbia caducifolia Haines, as suggested by  …

I did refer your keys, yet may have made some mistake in arriving to correct ID.
… you may be correct too.
Here are other photos of the same plant at same time.

Thanks … for complete plant. It is surely E. neriifolia. Any how posting only the tip as you did in first photograph can be confusing, as in this case.

that was a perfectionist’s effort.
thanks for a complete reply.
Euphorbia neriifolia L. no doubt

I agree … Many thanks …
The crux of this particular post is just putting names of the plant in various languages of our country.
Copy-pasted my work from this Euphorbia neriifolia page at Names of Plants in India.
In that site, the photos put for any species discussed, is from an angle of Mother Nature as an artist.
My thanks to both of you for validating the ID.
And I am very happy that no post escapes keen (validating) eyes of efloraofindia.

Could this be Euphorbia neriifolia?
…, I would be grateful if you could validate the plants seen by me during Flower Show & BBC Show, time permitting.

As learnt during present fortnight, I assume this to be Euphorbia neriifolia

This is not a native species.
Many of the plants are imported from India.
Due to which I posted for id. To me it resembled E. neriifolia.

This species is E. neriifolia L.

Perhaps Euphorbia neriifolia.
…., you are one of our leading contributor. It would be good for you, experts as well as our website if you always include one or two close ups of flowers and fruits. Here close up of stem (spirally arranged spines) provided some clue, but difficult to say conclusively without flowers or fruits.

Thanks …!! I will go through according to your suggestions.

Euphorbia nivulia SN AUG 61 : 4 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (2).
Euphorbia nivulia hedge from Udupi district of Karnataka

I don’t think stem is angular in E. nivulia. This should be E. neriifolia.

E. nivulia (tree with distinct trunk, leaves 10-25 cm long, spines 5 mm long) can be confused with E. caducifolia (shrub, not trunck, leaves 3-9 cm long, spines 5-10 mm long) but not E. neriifolia.
/species/a—l/e/euphorbiaceae/euphorbia

E. neriifolia.

E. neriifolia. This is a common plant, in Mysore and surrounding areas, planted as live hedge to protect the farms from livestock intrusion.

An earlier plant posted from the same area was identified as above.
That’s the reason I thought this was same.

It’s ok, I hope E. caducifolia stem not angular and twisted too

I agree with …
But think it is more closer to Euphorbia neriifolia as per keys, images and details herein.
Other posts by …, may also be of this species.

Possibly E. neriifolia.

This plant is what I always think of as Euphorbia neriifolia…. hope it is correct!

This appears to be a mature plant of E. neriifolia L., commonly found in Western and Central India. Compare the characters with the description and illustrations given in the revision of the genus in India.

Thanks for validating this post.

Another similar one seen in the same area was confirmed as Euphorbia caducifolia. That got me confused.

– First two are clearly E. antiquorum, and fourth E. neriifolia. Third is not clear from a distance.

Came across this Euphorbia sp. at CBD Belapur hills (Navi Mumbai).
I think in one of our earlier discussion this was tentatively identified as Euphorbia neriifolia. Kindly validate the ID..

Nice photos.

EUPHORBIACEAE FORTNIGHT: Euphorbia caducifolia Haines from Uttarakhand_DSR_11 :  Attachments (2). 2 posts by 2 authors.
Euphorbia caducifolia Haines is a common ornamental cactus (as usually considered) in Pantnagar.

It is true.

I think this is not Euphorbia caducifolia, Rather this appears to be close to Euphorbia neriifolia as per keys and details herein.

Tamhini ghat near Pune, MH :: Euphorbia neriifolia for validation:: ARK2019-99 : 7 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (3)

This plant was seen by the roadside in the Tamhini ghat near Pune, MH in Aug 2019.
I thought it to be Euphorbia neriifolia.
Requested to please provide ID.

Yes, … nice photos. as per this nice thread where … discusses the difference
https://groups.google.com/indiantreepix/MvcmwEeE4e8
it also lists our earlier threads. I love the last picture. this is how it would grow if left undisturbed and unpruned and NOT artificially fed

This was one of the biggest/ tallest specimen of E. neriifolia I have seen.

Yes it is !

When old, already in tree form, it is easy to tell E. nerifolia from E. nivulia by spiral arrangement of spines/ cyathia in former, leaf or no leaf. It becomes difficult when they are not old enough, without trunk ……. E. caducifolia becomes 3rd option ….. at times spine arrangement looks both straight and spiral, stem winged and non-winged …… .more so when they are leafless.

good to know. may be you will send in your pictures in a new thread later so we will have all the variations
