Euphorbia tirucalli in flowering (TN) : 7 posts by 5 authors. Attachments (3) – one of 2 MB.

I am sharing herewith the photos of Euphorbia tirucalli (Euphorbiaceae) in flowering. This is my first experience in seeing the inflorescence!
Evergreen Shrub.
Tamil Names: கொம்புகள்ளி, பாச்சான் மரம்.
Periyappa Nagar, Palani, Tamil Nadu.
DoP: 14-05-2018.

Thanks a lot … It is really not common to see this plant in flowering..

.

Euphorbia tirucalli-contd.:
I found this excerpt from the net (Wikipedia) quite alarming.
Euphorbia tirucalli (also known as Firestick Plants, Indian Tree Spurge, Naked Lady, Pencil Tree, Sticks on Fire or Milk Bush) (Sanskrit: सप्तला saptala, सातला satala,Marathi : sher-kandvel शेर-कांडवेल) is a shrub that grows in semi-arid tropical climates.
It has a wide distribution in Africa, being prominently present in northeastern, central and southern Africa. It may also be native in other parts of the continent as well as some surrounding islands and the Arabian peninsula and has been introduced to many other tropical regions. Its status in India is uncertain. It grows in dry areas, and is often used to feed cattle or as hedging.[1]
It is well known in Sri Lanka where it is called Sinhala: නවහන්දි Navaha

ndi[3] in Sinhalese.
Milk bush is a hydrocarbon plant that produces a poisonous latex which can, with little effort, be converted to the equivalent of gasoline. This led chemist Melvin Calvin to propose the exploitation of milk bush for producing oil. This usage is particularly appealing because of the ability of milk bush to grow on land that is not suitable for most other crops. Calvin estimated that 10 to 50 barrels of oil per acre was achievable. It has also been used in the production of rubber, but this was not very successful.[1]
Milk bush also has uses in traditional medicine in many cultures. It has been used to treat cancers, excrescences, tumors, and warts in such diverse places as Brazil, India, Indonesia, Malabar and Malaysia. It has also been used as an application for asthma, cough, earache, neuralgia, rheumatism, toothache, and warts in India.[4] There is some interest in milk bush as a cancertreatment. However Euphorbia Tirucalli has been associated with Burkitt’s lymphoma and thought to be a cofactor of the disease rather than a treatment [5]
In the 1980s the Brazilian national petroleum company Petrobras began experiments based on the ideas that Calvin put forth.
First aid
The milky sap contained in this plant is corrosive and extremely toxic. Contact with skin causes severe burning; contact with the eyes may cause severe pain, and may cause temporary blindness for up to 7 days. For eye exposures, flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention. Over-the-counter antihistamines may provide relief for sensitive patients. Symptoms may worsen over 12 hours. If swallowed, may cause burning to mouth, lips, and tongue. Deaths have been recorded from swallowing the sap and, if swallowed, one should seek medical attention. If one still shows symptoms of rash after 10 days or more, it can be assumed that the rash will enduring the remainder of the infected person’s life. Similar to the common STD herpes.

– most of the Euphorbiaceae plants with latex are poisonous for humans and if goes in the eyes would lead to vision problems. Quite a few of the Euporbiaceae otherwise have medicinal uses and are significant for oil, fuel, energy  and other economic uses.

Kalli pal :  I think the milky juice from this plant was earlier used to kill new born female infants in some parts of Southern India. Clarification needed.

Euphorbia tirucalli:
I hope I have the id right.

–  Yes indeed this is Euphorbia tirucalli. Common names Pencil Tree/ Milkbush/RubberFinger Trees/ Tiru-Malu. This one was missing in the panaroma of Euphorbias provided so far !
It is called Pencil tree because of the tough, spineless shrub with pencil like dark green branches and a few small grass-green leaves at the tips of growing branches as seen in your pictures.
The flowers are also found clustered at the apexes of the branches, and the plant produces a milky

– Isnt the milky sap poisonous especially to the eyes?

– Would like to add the current accepted name as per Kew Plant LIst is Euphorbia tirucalli L. Attaching the type specimen from Kew herbarium.

Euphorbia tirucalli L. Sp. Pl. 1: 452 (1753).

Type: LECTOTYPE – Tithymalus Indicus frutescens” in Commelin, Hort. Med. Amstelod. Pl. Rar., 1: 27, t. 14, 1697 [Designated by:      Leach in Kirkia 9 : 70 (1973)]
t. 14 is attached with the mail. Linne described this plant from India, but I have never seen this from Wild and my plant never flowers in my garden..
@.. sir, yes the latex are poisonous, but in small quantities they are medicinal, of course not for the eye.

– Well one of my doctor friends long time back had asked me to remove them as my children were tiny tots that time.

Please help to identify this unusual small tree……. I found them growing mostly around the hedges of rice or other crop fields and along the roads……. Did not noticed them around Hampi area but while travelling towards Badami, Pattadakal & Aihole region of Karnataka, saw them everywhere.
A cut on the branch gave out white latex which is seen oozing out, in the picture attached…….all these pictures taken on 15th Oct,13.

… could be the pencil tree … Euphorbia tirucalli. Please wait for comments.

……….I think you are right……. it could be Ephorbia tirucalli…… but we will wait for comments.

… is right- I think.

To me also this looks like Euphorbia tirucalli, though haven’t seen such big forms..

Yes … the pencil “tree” to my visualization is a very chaotic shrub; but here the posted plant has assumed trunk, seasoned bark etc – almost a strong tree. Googled to find … Plants Rescue and Plantz Africa … but was not fully confident.

Though it is not common; It is not unusual to see tree like specimens.

Euphorbiaceae Fortnight : Euphorbia tirucalli, L. <=> Pencil Tree – Bangalore – RA : Attachments (6). 2 posts by 2 authors.
Link

Euphorbia tirucalli has unmistakable, brush-like branch masses that are a noticeable feature of the plant.
It also occurs over the widest distribution of all local euphorbias and is also a very variable plant ranging from many-branched shrubs to large trees, depending on the particular habitat. The rubber-hedge euphorbia is a many-branched, succulent plant, usually 3-5 m but may reach 10 m on occasion.
The bark of very old specimens is grey and rough with longitudinal dents and ridges that break up into very small fragments. There are sometimes conspicuous, small protuberances, such as a bulge, knob, or swelling, on the bark, and occasionally black, rough, crosswise bands.
The branches are cylindrical, smooth and glabrous-green, 5-8 mm in diameter, forming brush-like masses that are the best known feature of this species. Plants are without spines.
The leaves are small and slender, up to 12 x 1.5 mm, rarely seen, as they fall very early. Leaf scars on young twigs form conspicuous dents which contract until they are no more than grey dots on older branchlets and can even be seen on fairly thick green stems. The thin twigs are pendant (hanging down), pale green and occur opposite each other, alternate or in groups on the branchlets which gives a rather untidy and rounded appearance to the crowns.
The flowers are yellow, inconspicuous, and carried in clusters at the apex of the short branches or in the angles of branches. They appear in September to December

Once again a very common species posted.

It is a potted plant. It doesn’t flower. Which plant is this?

… the pencil tree, Euphorbia tirucalli.

It does flower (may not be all plants – I am not sure), in the axils of branches. The flowers are tiny.

गुजराती: खरसाणी थुहर ,डींडलीयो थोर

yes pencil cactus,. … Euphorbia tirucalli.
it flowers in hot and humid weather, and when its mature. new leaves also come out then (i see a few very small green leaves on your plant, esp in extreme left lower corner, when enlarged). needs somewhat humid heat.
just be patient but donot let children play with it. its not an innocuous plant, although it has no thorns etc.
when handling it or trimming //cutting one needs to be very carful not to get the sap in the eyes: keratouveitis…. and on skin…. severe burn like blisters

i looked at your picture just now again, … i see lots of tiny leaves. so plant is growing etc. just be patient.  i took liberty to circle some of them in red and the i even used black for the circles to be a bit prominent. hope this helps. your plant is doing well.

¿ Euphorbia tirucalli ?
Dear friends,
Please validate whether Euphorbia tirucalli. In the first two pictures, the leaves seen, belong to another vine, which is perhaps obvious. The plant in last picture is at another location in the park.

growth pattern does not resemble what i have right now in my garden in Bengal. may be because of local climate and soil???

Thanks … I too am not comfortable with my guess.
Euphorbia tirucalli would not tend to droop the way it is seen in the posted pictures.
Will wait for comments.

is this one plant or a jumble of many? any brownish barked stem? ie old growth?  i could not decide if this was one plant or not

May be only one plant OR at the most two.
I am not familiar with flora of that region, cannot comment confidently.

…, after thoroughly looking at the pictures, here is the observation (same as what was written in the first post) …
In the first two pictures, the leaves seen, belong to another vine.
In the last picture, the same plant is seen at another location in the park.

Perhaps the pencil-stemmed plant is Leptadenia pyrotechnica as seen in this in this post. At this time, the posted plant is yet to flower and get leaves. Please validate.

To me also appear so. Thanks, …
