It is a resilient mangrove species, does not have salt glands and aerial roots, and so technically it is a non-mangrove or mangrove associate species. It has adapted to its saline environment by a salt excretory mechanism known as gall formation. The network of perforated snake-like roots help to grip the less consolidated and eroding soils. The species has both male and female trees, female flowers produce pink berry-like fruits from a March to October. The above is male flowering with several catkin-like spikes.

This is a poisonous plant and may cause blindness if the sap enters the eyes. However, the sap also has medicinal properties and is indigenously used in the treatment of rheumatism.

Excoecaria agallocha –Milky mangrove. I have taken these pictures at the Salim Ali Bird sanctuary, Goa, mangroves section, in Sep.2010. This is the only member of the Euphorbiaceae family associated with mangroves ( Ref: Godrej A symbiosis of Industry and nature, 2000, pg:91). It is a resilient mangrove species, does not have salt glands and aerial roots, and so technically it is a non-mangrove or mangrove associate species. I had taken this picture with my blackberry phone last year. This tree was seen in Mahim creek (Mumbai). I have only one photo but hope to be able to identify it. Sorry I don’t have photos from more angles as
stipulated in the guidelines. These are the male flowers of Excoecaria agallocha. The dark green leaves in the photograph belong to this tree.

Mangrove Tree at Malvan, Sindhudurg coast. It is also called as Blinding tree. Excellent photos. The only Mangrove tree from Euphorbiaceae with poisonous latex.

I had recently been to a small village near the Konkan coast, Devgad, Maharashtra.
Noticed around 7-8 species of mangroves on a stretch of around 500 metres.
Requesting to please ID this mangrove captured in May 2014.

[Euphorbiaceae]. Zooming into your last photograph [Type14_IMG_9943.JPG], a pair of basal glands at the petiole junction is just about visible in certain leaves on careful observation. Have marked out this characteristic feature in your image.
