The fruit is three-lobbed and is covered with a fine felt of red glands on the surface.These are collected and a powder known as Kamala extensively used for dyeing silk is prepared.
Its dye is supplanted by newer synthetic dyes… the red “granular” substance on the seed covers is supposed to have been a dye used to color natural fibres…
Bark is much liked by Elephants.

It has been in use as medicinal tree in India for ages.
The tree can grow up to 10 m tall.
Alternately arranged, ovate or rhombic ovate leaves are rusty-velvety. Male and female flowers occur in different trees. Female flowers are borne in lax spike like racemes at the end of branches or in leaf axils. Male flowers occur three together in the axils of small bracts. Capsule is trigonous-globular, covered with a bright crimson layer of minute, easily detachable reddish powder.
Kamala is supposed to be a very useful tree. It is source of Kamala dye which is used in colouring silk and wool. It is used as anti-oxidant for ghee and vegetable oils. Oil is used as hair-fixer and added in ointment. Seed oil is used in paints and varnishes. Seed cake is used as manure. Okay.

the species are from elevation about 400 meters, central – East MP and photos are all from 2/2020
1. Large tree black seeds covered by green pods which are covered in red powder, big red beatles roam the trees, fruits mature spring
2. Leaves, yellow flowers, and thorns identical to babul / acacia nilotica but major Difference in Pods (photo) and in bark = babul : black rugged bark, this species : white smooth bark. (this was seen in a garden of former princely state in MP therefore it could have been brought from anywhere : in India or elsewhere)
3. Leaves like seena (first photo) and pods-seeds like leucaneura leucocephala (subabul)
4. Common seen growing in water, purple flower (seeds not available)
5. Large tree, small fruit with 2 seeds (taste like raisin when black)

21 December 2014 Check for Mallotus philippensis.. Thank you … I had suspected it to be Kamala (Trees of Delhi, p121) too, but hadn’t seen a close up of its fruit before. . Mallotus philippensis/ABJAN06 : 10 posts by 6 authors. Attachments (6) I believe this to be the male Mallotus philippensis. But then, I could be completely wrong as the leaf shapes do not match (Salix sp.?). I had posted the female tree with red berries on 21 December (the first picture–new for comparison).

I was completely off the mark, as I had suspected. And thanks to … for confirmation too. The first photograph is of Mallotus philippinensis. Remember to spell it correctly. All the above quoted spells are wrong. Other photos are of Colebrookia oppositifolia- an aromatic shrub under Lamiaceae /Labiatae. Thank you … for the correction. I assumed that the spellings given in Flowers of India website and the Trees of Delhi book by Pradip Krishen were the correct ones. Both these sources spell it as Mallotus philippensis and so does this article on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mallotus_philippensis I had made similar mistake in posting Mallotus philippinensis and Colebrookia oppositifolia as a same plant.

Hopefully these variations are standardized now, thanks to the global online databases with great accuracy in nomenclature. Published old floras, however, still carry these errors. The old floras spell the names correctle,but it is the made race for publication by copying from anywhere and publishibg floras by sitting in libraries and w\ithout verifying/confirming the updated Nomenclature from publications like Index Kewensis. Croton philippensis Lam., Encycl. 2: 206. 1786 (as philippense). As per the ICBN, the original spelling of a taxon must be retained. Hence we have to maintain the spelling “philippensis” here and not “philippinensis”. Lamarck treated the gender of the genus as neuter, but now the gender of Mallotus is adopted and accepted to be masculine. I hope that the above point clarifies the spelling of the species. I photographed a tree at about 800m altitude yesterday where the red pouch like fruits were open showing the black seeds underneath. I suspect it to be the handiwork of some birds. birds or the natural drying of the capsule that then burst open and would release the seeds First Mallotus phillipensis with fruits Thank you … They could of course be opening up as you suggested, .., and dropping the seeds in that manner.
