Request for identification – 03012011PC2: – this could be Synadenium grantii of the same family (Euphorbiaceae). If this is correct, then i would like to know why it is cultivated. It is not an ornamental plant i feel. I used to think this is an obnoxious, fast spreading weed. It is also said to be ‘very poisonous’ ( http://www.plantoftheweek.org/week344.shtml). – It is part of the effort to green Delhi during the common wealth games. The entire stretch bordering Lodi road is covered with these plants. – For me also this looks more like Synadenium grantii Hook.f. of Euphorbiaceae. This shrub is extensively utilized for Fencing garden and households. – Yes it is Synadenium grantii, also grown in our College botanical garden. Incidently I saw it lot growing wild while travelling from Bangalore to Ooty, growing along road sides, much taller than we find it in Delhi. – I fear sooner or later this poisonous plant will become another obnoxious weed in our country. It spreads quite fast. Dr. … may have some interesting observation on this plant, i hope. – It seems to be a hardy plant that does not require much water; may be that is why it is being grown so extensively. Does it also show allelopathy? I see no weeds growing any where near it?

NPGS / GRIN and The Plant List (2010). Version 1 treat Synadenium grantii Hook.f. as synonym of Euphorbia umbellata (Pax) Bruyns. Perhaps one thing needs to be resolved, whether above plant is to be called Euphorbia grantii Oliv., 1875 or Euphorbia umbellata (Pax) Bruyns, 2007
The Plant list lists both as distinct

Under E. umbellata following are listed as synonyms

I thought of checking Wikipedia, which in recent years is turning to be reliable under E. grantii it shows image of Synadenium grantii
Under E. umbellata web shows images similar to above and Wikipedia although not having any image but lists synonyms similat to the Plant List.
Frankly images on the internet are no help although description in Hortus Third may help in calling our plant as E. umbellata (syn: Synadenium grantii)
Euphorbia grantii Oliver: Robust shrub, 5-10 ft; leaves somewhat leathery , strap-shaped or linear-lanceolate, up to 1 ft long, 1 inch wide, sessile; cyathia in umbels to 15 inch across, glands 4.
Synadenium grantii Hook.f.: Shrub, 8-12 ft; leaves somewhat fleshy, oblanceolate to obovate, 3-7 inch long, tapering to petiole 7-8 mm long; margin entire, wavy to slightly toothed, cyathia in axillary much-branched cymes. Leaves are red in cultivar ‘Rubra’. This plant is Synadenium grantii Hook.f. S. umbellatum Pax is usually treated as one of its synonym.
However some recent authors treat this genus as synonym of Euphorbia and then the correct name should be Euphorbia pubescens (Pax) Bruyns This African species was introduced into India and is now found as fence in many areas, particularly in S.India, It is often found naturalised in some areas. Please refer to EGGLI, U. 2002. Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants: Dicotyledons. Susan Carter of Kew has done the genera Euphorbia and Synadenium. I think you mean to say Euphorbia umbellata (Pax) Bruyns instead of Euphorbia pubescens (Pax) Bruyns, here. If you treat Synadenium as a synonym of Euphorbia, then the correct name should be: Euphorbia umbellata (Pax) Bruyns [synonyms: Synadenium umbellatum Pax (1894) ; Synadenium grantii Hook.f.]
