Garden tree for ID 020511MK1:  Please validate this tree.
Date: 15 Apr 2011; 05:00PM
Location: near ESHA foundation, Coimbatore dist., TN
Habitat: planted in garden
4 – 5 M height tree with 10x8cm leaves bearing fruits of c.6cm across. I had not observed flowers here. Is this a Euphorbiaceae member?

Leaves look like Ficus arnottiana but I wonder whether the tree produces such large fruits, although they are long peduncled.

This can be Aleurites fordii or moluccana, need to see closeup of leaves and also a picture of flowers when possible.

I hope you are right. The fruits do lokk like Aleurites. We have one tree of A. moluccana in DU  campus that mostly produces lobed leaves, but a few un-lobed ones do look like this, though narrower and gradually tapered.

Reg. the id of Aleurites fordii or moluccana is correct. I have a well grown plant in our collection and also the picture of flowers as well as fruit. May take some time to locate the pict?.

Pl. go through my blog nbranaikatti.blogspot.com which may be useful.
If you find any sp. id is wrong pl. inform so that I can rectify the same.

Pl. find the attached file contain the details about Aleurites fordii. Hope this will be useful.

Most probably this is Aleurites fordii of Euphorbiaceae family. Leaves of A. moluccana are mostly lobed.
The attached file, an MSc dissertation, would be helpful.

Trees of Lalbagh, Bangalore – Vernicia fordii – Tung Oil Tree:
It is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree growing to 20 m tall, with a spreading crown. The bark is smooth and thin, and bleeds latex if cut.
The leaves are alternate, simple, 4.5–25 cm long and 3.5–22 cm broad, heart-shaped or with three shallow, maple-like lobes, green above and below, red conspicuous glands at the base of the leaf, and with a 5.5–26 cm long petiole.
The flowers are 2.5–3.5 cm diameter, with five pale pink to purple petals with streaks of darker red or purple in the throat; it is monoecious with individual flowers either male or female, but produced together in the inflorescences. The flowers appear before or with the leaves in loose, terminal clusters.
The fruit is a hard, woody pear-shaped drupe 4–6 cm long and 3–5 cm diameter, containing four or five large, oily seeds; it is green initially, becoming dull brown when ripe in autumn

Tree ID- Cox Town Bangalore:
A common tree here. Leaves quite large.
Location- Cox Town, Bangalore
Date- June 3, 2012

Can you tell me exact location? I really like to go an see it.
I think its

In Lalbagh there is a board which says the flowers, fruits are poisonous

Thanks for the ID … The tree is on wheeler road extension, at the intersection of milton street. Right in front of Basha department store.
There is another tree in Milton street park. These locations are marked on google maps. If you need further directions, I can describe on the phone.

Aleurites species. The leaves of Vernicia fordii (Aleuritis fordii) look some what different.

It is certainly Vernicia (= Aleurites), but species could be identified from flowers.

I rememeber two boys poisnoned and rushed to our Docir in IBG 40 yr s ago. At least there is a warning in Lalbagh but no scuch in IBG. Diffenbachia was used on criminals in history and so called dumb cane.in any pocket books of one dollar

When is the tung oil tree supposed to flower? I can go and check this tree again

As already said the leaves of this species donot match A. fordii. Mostly this species could be Reutealis trisperma Synonyms: Aleurites trisperma (common name: Philippine Tung Tree, Soft Lumbang Tree).

Vernicia fordii, an avenue tree in Bengaluru.

I have found this plant in our botanical garden Karnatak University, Dharwad. It is written that it is a Aleurites spp. I too found this in the Google but unable to identify the species after checking it in flowersofindia.net and theplantlist.org.
Attached some photos of the tree, and some photos of T.S of ovary, stamen attached to the stigma (syngenicious), please help in identifying the species.

Pl. also check: Aleurites moluccana & Vernicia fordii (Syn: Aleurites fordii Hemsl.) in efi

The precocious inflorescences and the 5-loculed ovary point to Vernicia fordii.

Please Id the tree. Photos taken in Mysore on 6.8.2019. Could this be Aleurites species.

For me it is Aleurites moluccana.

google search shows two types of leaf shape. photos from reputable sources on google search “Aleurites moluccana leaves”

one set of opposite shapes : one type is from auroville botanical, seems authentic and another from dr starr who i respect.
now my question are there two variations to this same species???? or one is immature, another older ? if so your tree should show both types? the younger and the older.
questions questions. may be some one who has experience in this nut can tell us?

Thanks for your excellent analysis on the subject. I fully agree with your doubts.. I have been pondering over the same doubts. I consulted one of the botanists here,  who helped me here and familiar on local trees ID.  I put the same questions: Biodiversity of leaves within the species ? But not able to get a convincing reply. I have not observed the flowers during the season. I am hopeful of getting a convincing comments from the scholars of this group on the ID of the tree.
Unfortunately, many of my postings to the group remain unidentified (properly) !!!

Thanks for your observations. I will check the references.

I also thank you for your efforts for compiling the different shapes of leaves. Awesome! It will be very useful to the group.

let me know what you find. May be the two leaf shapes represents two different species of trees which are called Indian walnuts. but are scientifically distinct.
Just like many of the Acer family leaves… some can be typically maple leaf in its variation, while other Acers can have simple oblong or ovate or elliptical.
but their fruits are distinctly winged fruits. they are all called maples with different leaf shapes and are different species.
etc etc…. i am sure there are many such examples in nature. I cant think of one right now.

I think more closer to images at Vernicia fordii rather than those at Aleurites moluccana

Thanks … I shall check.
