Which Bauhinia species? :  Attachments (3). 12 posts by 6 authors.
At Sanjeevaiah Park, Secunderabad on 25/5/08.

It is possibly Bauhinia acuminata an erect shrub sometimes called the ‘Orchid tree’.

Thanks, … for the feedback. But the leaves & flowers look different from the previous posting of Bauhinia acuminata at efi thread
I am attaching two of these pictures again.

It does look like B. acuminata. There are tell-tale leaves with two leaflets, and I could not find any other white bauhinia which is bushy. I am attaching a few photographs of the flower from my garden. It is blooming even now.

Thanks, …, for the feedback. I find shape of petals a bit different. My posted flower also appear a bit yellowish.

Here’s one more: Bahunia acuminata in the garden in front of my office.

It is interesting to note that B.acuminata is flowering in different places at the same time.
Here is one Bauhinia acuminata shot by me in Pune 1st Jun 2008.

I am unable to see clearly the flowers in the shrub but the other two pictures are not of Bauhinia acuminata L. They are of Bauhina tomentosa L. The flower buds, trumpet-like pale yellow flowers helps to differentiate from B. acuminata in which flowers are always pure white. In Bauhinia tomentosa bright yellow flower with a maroon blotch at the base of the upper most petal is also seen.

Thank you for having dug out old post in response to a plant that I had posted a few weeks back. It is certain that the plant posted by you is same as mine. It differs from B. tomentosa in
1. Leaves larger and not tomentose/coriaceous
2. Leaves with a odour of curry leaves
3. Flowers pale yellow
4. Purple blotch missing from the upper petal
This seems to be a horticultural variety of B. tomentosa or something else.

Posting a picture of flower of a small tree which resembles B. tomentosa in all respects except the following
1. Leaves larger, 8-10 cm wide
2. Leaves odorous with a smell similar to curry leaves
3. Upper petal lacks the purple blotch.
Hope these are to be taken as just variations.

Cultivated Bauhinia tree seen in a garden in Mumbai.

Couldn’t get closer as it was on a slope, high up.
Bauhinia acuminata? It has pure white flowers.
In this, one petal had yellowish color.
Picture taken on 26th July,15.

It’s flower formation also looks different than B. acuminata.

I think Bauhinia acuminata only

Thanks to you and … for follow up and id.

May be forma concolor of B tomentosa.

seems … may be on the right tract
better // more pictures would have helped or a follow up visit when more flowers are open to get to the center of them

This is Bauhinia tomentosa L.

It is my pleasure to share few images of Bauhinia tomentosa (Fabaceae)
Habit:  Shrub-Small sized tree.
Habitat: Cultivated.
Sighting: Chikmagalur and Tumkur, Karnataka, about 900 msl
Date: 29-05-2014, 07-07-2014 and 20-07-2015

nice. i have this just outside of my garden boundary wall (used to be inside, but our municipality broke down that line)
neighborhood women and maids do not leave a single bud to open  and let the tree look beautiful
they steal them (even after repeated requests to let  at least one survive)
how do Gods love stolen flowers is beyond my logical brain!
may be the process of offering flowers by stealing from someone’s garden is a mysterious process.
SO i have sometimes seen a flower open in my own house when i “steal” my own flower bud before it gets hijacked
but no pollinators have ever found my shrub. no seed pods

This one looks like Bauhinia tomentosa L., as some similar species shared and identified in efI site https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/species/a–-l/f/fabaceae/bauhinia/bauhinia-tomentosa

At Belghoria (KOLKATA) on 25-01-2020

Yes … sir.

Nice photographs. It is common in South India (Chennai). I have seen many in Mysore. The flowers are used for pooja.  ‘Kolakatte mandaram’ in Tamil.

Thank you … It was my first record of this plant.

usually recognised by light yellow color and a coffee colored patch on central petal, but can be without it ….

Yes Sir, I read about it in toptropicals. I think first picture (IMG_20200125_165335.jpg) shows hint of coloured patch, not clear though.
