Flora of Manipur: Desmodium gyrans – efloraofindia | Google Groups : 2 images.
Desmodium gyrans (= D.motorium), the Indian Telegraphic Plant, found wild in Manipur forests.

Darwin called the plant Hedysarum; modern botanists call it either Desmodium gyrans, or more correctly these days, Codariocalyx motorius. Its common name is Dancing Grass or Telegraph Plant or Semaphore Plantafter the leaf movements, which resemble semaphore signals.

thanks … for the info. Codariocalyx is again an old name i think.
there are video files in the net wherein you can watch the movement of leaflets.

I will, thanks for informing

.

Interesting plant from North-East: While going through the plant list of North east in one of our project, I came across an interesting plant name called “dancing plant“. On going through the literature i found out that it has leaflets which are sensitive to sunlight and move  at a faster rate to help the terminal leaflet to orient itself for getting maximum sunlight. I don’t have the photograph of the plant but  felt this information may be interesting for the group members.
the details of the plant are:

Codariocalyx motorius (Houtt.) H.Ohashi
syn:  Desmodium motorium, Desmodium gyrans
common names: telegraph plant, semaphore plant,  Dancing plant http://culturesheet.org/fabaceae:codariocalyx:motorius
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codariocalyx_motorius
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXt0iPMKSTA&NR=1
any member who might have come across this plant and have images can upload their plant picture in the forum.

THE PLANT USED BY DR JAGADISH CHANDRA BOSE : 5 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (3)

Some years back a one of my friend showed a plant in his garden and told me that this plant was used by Dr Jagadish Chandra Bose for his thesis on sensitivity of plants. He told me that the name of plant is BON CHARAL. He did not know the scientific name of the plant. In fact he gave me a plant which in our garden.

There is an article on today’s Calcutta edition of The Telegraph (BOSE BREATHES AGAIN). Some academicians of Presidency collage are trying to repeat the same experiment which Dr Bose performed so many years back (Bose was born on 30-11-1858). In that article they mentioned BON CHARAL and scientific name given is Desmodium motorius. As the plant is in our garden, I thought I will share images of the plant species which the great genius used  for his experiment.
Attaching a scan copy of the article and two images of the plant.
The plant is commonly known as Indian telegraphic plant or the dancing plant.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

Attaching few images of Desmodiu motorium syn. Codariocalyx motorius (BON CHARAL/ TELEGRAPH PLANT/ DANCING PLANT/ SEMAPHORE PLANT).This is the plant on which Dr Jagadish Chandra Bose worked so many years back to establish movement of plants and their response to stress. The small lateral leaflets in the images, move at speeds rapid enough to be perceived with naked eyes.
let’s remember the great genius and polymath India has produce on his birth day. This is the minimum we can do.
Millions PRANAM to the great soul.

Fabaceae.

Pl. check Alysicarpus species.

This is Alysicarpus belgamensis, this specimen has simple leaves, try to find out trifoliate leaves.

I am afraid it does not seem matching with Alysicarpus belgaumensis
but I guess it looks like matching more with Alysicarpus rugosus (Willd.)DC. (accepted name)
http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=110&taxon_id=101234

I want details of this specimens for taxonomic studies. I need actual location and specimens.

Thanks, …, How did you say that it is more matching with Alysicarpus rugosus ( ? just because it is in checklist of Nepal) ?
It did not match with Alysicarpus rugosus as per the following as the pods look totally different:

Just guessed but realize now that not matching to any of two!

I agree with you. It doesn’t match with A. rugosus because A. rugosus has transversely wrinkled pod and D. belgamensis has pod similar to desmodium but quite different pod ornamentation, it has reticulate venation and joints of pod slightly constructed, about habitat D. belgamensis always reported at high altitude. If it is not match with this character, please send me herbarium specimens for further details study of morphology.

Just guessed but realize now that not matching to any of two!

Codariocalyx sp. ??

Pl. check with images at
To me appears close as per first glance.

Looks like tending  to match with Codariocalyx motorius (Houtt.)H.Ohashi syn : Desmodium motorium (Houtt.) Merr. but still I feel different from flowers in the net.

To me looks different from images and references at Codariocalyx motorius

Yes, Pod looks different

I did not find any match to other Fabaceae sp. according to the efn
except for some closeness to the Codariocalyx motorius

Codariocalyx

I guess it is Codariocalyx motorius ! Your opinion …

Desmodium motorium

Codariocalyx motorius (Houtt.) H.Ohashi.
… , … has validated it as Desmodium motorium.

Yes this is Codariocalyx motorius, seed pods are new and immature here so looks different, flowers are also mainly purple but I have also observed such faded yellow color with some purple shade during rainy season.

Check Codariocalyx gyroides

Looks different from images of Codariocalyx gyroides herein and as per Fact sheet

It looks more closer to Desmodium alysicarpoides

I checked according  to your suggestion but it does not look like matching. Also, it is not listed in Nepal.

… has suggested Desmodium motorium and … as Codariocalyx motorius

This is undoubtedly Codariocalyx motorius (Synonyms – Desmodium motorium) as there are only two species in this genus and it’s not matching with other species which is Codariocalyx gyroides.
I am currently out of station so will share my plant images by next week that are matching with these images.

I am not sure, but it could be a species of Uraria.

Yes, it is dear …, thank you very much for ID my plant. The plant is growing in front of a neighborhood house very near to a narrow mud walk/path way, but also all branches of the plant fully obliqued to the way as  a disturbance to walkers, as a result, branches were trimmed by walkers themselves before capturing images, only two or three small branches are remaining. The other plant is supporting plant.
