But, Is it used in  making a person  to vomit ? Please clarify.
Little bit literature on Strychnos Nux Vomica literature, thought of  sharing with you.
Few decades back the seeds were exported to Australia in a large scale – to control Rabbit overpopulation
Used in rat poisoning,
Bitter taste 1 : 4,00,000 strychnine and water proportions can still make the water taste bitter,
To treat mentally ill patients, Improve blood circulation
Used in small quantities by drug addicts for small time pleasures,
Entire tree is poisonous, but the poison is mainly concentrated in the seeds. Sometimes, the grazing cow eats the leaves of this tree, and then the milk of this cow tastes bitter like that of the tree. Then the milk is considered  dangerous to humans.
English poet Milton, when these seeds entered London city in 1637.
“That fatal and
perfidious drug
built in the eclipse and
 rigged with curses dark”

you provided good information, also I appreciate your quotes on Milton’s poetic view.
Once I read in a book on Indian NTFPs quoting that the name ‘vomica’ does not relates to vomiting.
If any of you like to share more information of this nomenclature origin?

The grey disc-shaped seeds of this tree is exported to many nations from Dindigul and Madurai District of Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Name: Yettikaai; Yetti

After almost a year of trials and errors and disappointment, a batch of  seeds have finally sprouted. Attached are some pics.
Any guesses as to the ID?

what are those seeds of by the way?

You mean the gliricidia sepium that you had taken from me? If it is so, I am surprised it sprouts so easily.

/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/CIMG3029.JPG

The gliricidia sprouted easily enough. This is not the same. Meant to send you a pic.
… It is not A. Digitata.
… Am attaching a pic. of just the seeds for one more try!

Strychnos nux-vomica L. I believe.

… salutes dear … and in general to the group !!

Other recipients:
I agree with Dinesh.
I agree with

YES! Nux Vomica.
After some research I got to know that the seeds need to be at least 6 months old before they can be sprouted successfully, which also explained the mystery why the numerous seeds under the tree never sprouted or produced saplings. I was told by an old Mali at the Forest nursey that they needed to be soaked in hot water for about 20 minutes.
Both the tips helped.
Thanks to all who replied. This is a lovely group.

I think, this is a kind of dormancy in seeds. It can be due to hard seed coat which needs to be broken. the treatment can be hot water, acid treatment or rubbing with sand paper. Purpose is to weaken the seed coat. The process is known as scarification. In nature it is brought about by microorganisms or friction. You may try chemical or mechanical scarification to break the dormancy.

Nux vomica is enlisted in the top 10 poisonous plants of the world so beware of handling the seeds.

Strychnos nux-vomica.. sharing 23032011pj1:
It’s flowering time for Strychnos nux-vomica, you can see shiny light green leaves with greenish white flowers, favourite for Malabarpied hornbill.
Kaiga is natural habitat for this species and harbours many endemic species of plant.

Hornbills are very fond of Strychnos fruits and have the capability of detoxifying the major alkoloids strychnine and brucine present in these fruit.. really wonderful topic to study.

Could this be Strychnos nux-vomica?

I think Strychnos potatorum

I had gone through Loganiaceae page; the green flowers under Strychnos potatorum are flowers of S.nuxvomica; but S.potatorum posted by P.Santhan in efi pages with white flowers is S.potatorum.

yes it is Strychnos nuxvomica, which is abundant in our area

Thank you … for concluding with the ID.

The name karun gali- கருங்காலி and katu maram- காட்டு மரம் may not be for nux vomica.
Karungali don’t grow in tamilnadu’s plains. Nux vomica is a tree of dry zones.
We need to explore more in this.

Thanks … for validation.

Nux Vomica is popular in homeopathy – perhaps the plant is cultivated in suitable environment; OR parts of plant could be imported for making medicine,
கருங்காலி karu-n-kali, கடுமரம் katu-maram
The names have links embedded – please click on them – the links will lead to pages where reference information is put; they too have links embedded.
Both of these have entries in Tamil dictionary as strychnine tree – Please correct me if any error.
