Shrubs to 1.3 m tall; stem densely covered with paleaceous pectinate hairs. Leaves 4-11 x 1.5-4 cm, elliptic-oblong, base attenuate, apex acute, upper surface prominently lineolate; lower surface tomentose, 5-ribbed, drying dull-greenish; petiole to 1.5 cm long. Flowers solitary or few in rather dense clusters, c. 5 cm across; bracts 1.2-2 x 1-1.4 cm, boat-shaped, densely paleaceous hairy. Calyx tube 0.7-1 cm long, campanulate; lobes 5, 5-7 x 4-5 mm, ovate-lanceolate, densely paleaceous hairy. Petals 5, reddish purple, 1.5-2 x 0.7 – 1 cm, obovate. Stamens 10, alternating ones large and small; anthers dimorphic, dehiscence by apical pores. Ovary ovoid, 5-locular; ovules many; style simple. Capsules 1-1.5 x 0.8-1 cm, ovoid, irregularly dehiscent. Seeds many, minute.

Melastoma malabathricum, known also as Malabar Melastome, Indian Rhododendron and Singapore Rhododendron (Malay: Senduduk; Thai: โคลงเคลงขี้นก, Khlong khelng khi nok)[1] is a flowering plant in the family Melastomataceae.

It is present in China, Japan, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. It is usually found between 100 and 2,800 m on grasslands and sparse forests.[2] It has been declared a noxious weed in the United States.[3]
This plant has been used as a medicinal plant in certain parts of the world.[4] M. malabathricum is a known hyperaccumulator of aluminium, and as such can be used for phytoremediation.[5]
The taxonomy of the genus Melastoma requires a complete revision.[6] Early genetics studies were published from 2001,[7] through to recently,[8] but a revision based on them has yet to be. In 2001 Karsten Meyer proposed a revision in which the species Melastoma affine and other species were subsumed within this species M. malabathricum.[9]
In Australia, currently most authorities do not accept this; instead the naturally occurring populations in Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and north eastern New South Wales remain recognised as M. affine,[10][11] except by authorities in Queensland.[12][13] Australian populations which occur as weeds, having different flowers, for example in Warraroon Reserve, Lane Cove, Sydney, further south than the natural distribution of M. affine, are introduced plants of this M. malabathricum L. species.[14]

“TIBOUCHINA URVILLEANA” — My vote for Flora Picture of the year- 2008
Our gardener has the most wonderful job in the world. We share a common love for exotic flora. He would go to any length to look for the best plants and flowers for me. He is aware of the indian common names while I know the english ones. So if I am unable to describe a plant or flower to him, I draw it out to him, or I collect some leaves and we both go a hunting spree to locate the plant or find the names and ID of the same.
He got me this plant last monsoon saying, he didn’t know the name of the flower but it is really pretty and purple and I would surely love it. For almost a month I watched the plant and nothing bloomed from it. I told him it had no flowers. He was glum, and vouched that he did see some flowers and I admonished him that he must be high on bhang. Just a day later the first flower bloomed in the plant and it surely took my breath away. When I showed him the photos he face lit, “mai na kehta tha”!
Me and my husband spend two whole days trying to look for its ID and viola I am sharing it with you now.
Certainly wonderful images worth telling. It’s the real joy reflecting in seeing a beautiful plant bloom.

Forgot to mention Malaysia 🙂

Melastoma malabathricum, known also as Indian Rhododendron and Singapore Rhododendron. It is known  to accumulate aluminium (hyper accumulator) and can be used for  phytoremediation of soils contaminated with aluminium. It is a common plant in Malaysia. I have this plant in my home garden.

Thank you for this information, …:) Have seen plenty of the purple variety growing wild in Thatekkaad. Why is this also called Malabar BLACKmouth ?!! They are so attractive, no wonder they are grown in gardens too 🙂

A shrub with very thick leaves, margin has a outline of serrate hairs, opp-deccusate.
Indian Institute of Science Education and Research campus, Thiruvananthapuram.
It was found growing amidst other vegetation in the rocky cliffs.

It’s my pleasure to share pictures of Melastoma malbathricum from the banks of Hasdeo river, Chhattisgarh.
Shrubs were observed in flowering in January 2022, all along the river bank.
