Not a fully grown tree so no aerial roots observed. Leaf size 10 cm *5cm ; petiole 5cm Can any guess be made without the fruits? The grooved petiole, lamina shape and venation suggests Ficus amplissima. This bears short aerial roots and whitish small figs crowded at the end of branches. Could be F. microcarpa or F. retusa. Just a guess as i am not very sure of the id. I too think that this is F. amplissima. The very distinct 3 ribbed base is another important character for this species. A common indigenous species distributed in the Peninsular India, SL and Maldives Isl.
TSP-DEC2015-66-239: Images of Ficus amplissima (Moraceae) : 1 post by 1 author. Attachments (4) It is my pleasure to share few images of Ficus amplissima (Moraceae) Ref: florakarnataka Habit: Tree Habitat: Semi-evergreen forest Sighting: Chikmagalur, Karnataka, about 1000 msl Date: 29-05-2014 . I am looking for the origin of the word ‘amplissima’ for Ficus amplissima. as far as i could search i have found that it means the ‘largest’ but what is the significance of this meaning for Ficus amplissima. the fruits, leaves, tree and even the number of fruits per branch (even if we consider that amplissima is taken frrom the word ‘ample’) do not show any such characteristic.
Can any one please guide me.
Probably … may help. he normally adds this kind of information with his photographs on Flickr. At Dictionarist we see following possible meanings of the Latin amplissima:
… wide, broad, ample, vast, large, spacious; loose, full You may have already put amplissima efforts to know how this epithet justifies the species ! We have following qualities: wide, broad, ample, vast, large, spacious; loose, full … there may be few other adjectives associated. to check each relevantly for following aspects:
Read and compared species of Ficus put at Biotik; could not reach conclusion.
Sometimes I think the author(s) describing a new species MUST justify the epithet !! It is possible that the original paper may have the justification. Also possible the justification may not hold good in present times. Will keep my search on. Let us know from others’ comment(s). “Ficus amplissima Sm.
In F. mollis leaves and receptacles are always pubescent, and receptacles appear in axillary with leaves.” Trunk looks different here………… F. amplissima is a serious straggler with plenty of aerial roots ultimately contributing to main trunk . Ficus amplissima differs from other Ficus species having aerial roots; with very few aerial roots hardly touch the ground, unlikely in Ficus virens where aerial roots contribute more to main trunk.
F. amplissima has main trunk gregarious, light coloured, pale-green whitish or greyish, often marked with vertical clefts and smooth.
Ficus mollis has tomentose branchlets, and leaves spirally arranged.

The leaves of Set 1 do not have have a pointed tip like F. amplissima as per the pics in eFI. They seem to have a more rounded tip. Hoping to get further inputs. Set 1 is most likely Ficus amplissima. efi page on Ficus amplissima with images This should be Ficus amplissima, leaf apex is acute not acuminate (Ficus virens). Took out this Ficus seedling growing from under my Sintex tank; I could not get the hole roots out, but managed some of them and I planted it in a polybag and it after 2 weeks began sprouting new leaves. It is locally (Telugu) known as Juvvi. The fruits are eaten but many species of birds. The bark of adult trees is pale greenish-yellow and smooth.

Yes F. amplissima (bark greenish) Ficus amplissima, fruits stalkless and the species can very much be confused with Ficus infectoria….but the differences are:
1. bark greenish, yellow (greyish in F infectoria)
2. fruits stalkless (stalked in F infectoria) 3. fruits black when mature (white in F infectoria) 4. there is some difference in leaf outline also but the difference is slight (the leaf margins are more parallel in F. infectoria whereas the margins are more rounded in F. amplissima) the difference can be observed when both the leaves are held together… Fwd: [efloraofindia:186348] Identification of some trees species TK 5 : 4 posts by 2 authors. Ficus amplissima resembles a lot with Ficus virens. When I take a look, It is leaves by which I can differentiate the two …….. This ficus is from Jijamata Udyam, Mumbai. The pics were clicked in March 2019.
Is this F. virens? Requested to please provide ID.
I also think closer to images at Ficus virens I agree Ficus amplissima to me Thanks … for the ID. F. virens and F. amplissima confuse me a lot.I have still not learnt.
you are not alone. me too. so … please tell us Yes, they are easy to confuse especially as in the Mumbai area they both grow in the same forests. It is much more difficult to differentiate from pictures than from the tree itself.
Leaf venation differs, the colour of new foliage in each species is distinct, the colour and texture of the bark in each is different. This should be Ficus amplissima. next we must take on leaf venation as a must photograph esp in cases of such trees that have leaves etc as main feature and not spectacular flowers. So … if you and when you go back to this Udyan. take the back of the leaf pictures
