India (Bihar, Central and South provinces, Goa, Gujarat, Maharastra, Rajasthan), Maldives Island, Sri Lanka as per Synopsis of the Genus Ficus L. (Moraceae) in India Lal Babu Chaudhary*, Jana Venkata Sudhakar, Anoop Kumar, Omesh Bajpai, Rinkey Tiwari and G. V. S. Murthy- Taiwania, 57(2): 193-216, 2012;
.

I saw this ficus tree on Vetal Tekdi.
Not a fully grown tree so no aerial roots observed.
Leaf size 10 cm *5cm ; petiole 5cm
Can any guess be made without the fruits?

The grooved petiole, lamina shape and venation suggests Ficus amplissima. This bears short aerial roots and whitish small figs crowded at the end of branches.

Could be F. microcarpa or F. retusa. Just a guess as i am not very sure of the id.

I too think that this is F. amplissima. The very distinct 3 ribbed base is another important character for this species. A common indigenous species distributed in the Peninsular India, SL and Maldives Isl.

It is my pleasure to share few images of Ficus amplissima (Moraceae

Ficus amplissima:

I am looking for the origin of the word ‘amplissima’ for Ficus amplissima. as far as i could search i have found that it means the ‘largest’ but what is the significance of this meaning for Ficus amplissima. the fruits, leaves, tree and even the number of fruits per branch (even if we consider that amplissima is taken frrom the word ‘ample’) do not show any such characteristic.
Can any one please guide me.
Probably … may help. he normally adds this kind of information with his photographs on Flickr.

At Dictionarist we see following possible meanings of the Latin amplissima:
… wide, broad, ample, vast, large, spacious; loose, full
You may have already put amplissima efforts to know how this epithet justifies the species !
We have following qualities: wide, broad, ample, vast, large, spacious; loose, full … there may be few other adjectives associated.
to check each relevantly for following aspects:
  1. height, width, form of the tree
  2. girth of trunk
  3. canopy
  4. aerial roots
  5. latex exudation
  6. male, female flowers within the fig (the density)
  7. roots
  8. branches (the spreading)
  9. leaves (density of foliage)
  10. any other aspect(s) which we are not aware
Read and compared species of Ficus put at Biotik; could not reach conclusion.
Sometimes I think the author(s) describing a new species MUST justify the epithet !!
It is possible that the original paper may have the justification.
Also possible the justification may not hold good in present times.
Will keep my search on.
Let us know from others’ comment(s).

efi page on Ficus microcarpa

This is Ficus amplissima J. E. Sm.;  I have also seen many plants grow upon F. amplissima as epiphytes. so it (round balls) is looking like epiphytes.

Photographs are identified as Ficus amplissima Sm.
Drooping leaf clusters are commonly forming in F. microcarpa and F. amplissima.

Thanks … Can you just guide me to differentiate between F.microcarpa and F.amplissima ?

This could be Ficus amplissima

Thanks, … Let me check it out.

can you send higher resolution pics of the leaves? It isn’t possible to see the venation clearly for positive id.
It looks more like F. amplissima than F. mollis.

I will try to get a better picture of the leaves.

Ficus amplissima Sm.
In F. mollis leaves and receptacles are always pubescent, and receptacles appear in axillary with leaves.

Figs Of Bangalore – RA – Ficus mollis – Soft Fig Tree (Please Confirm):  6 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (7)
Soft Fig is a fig tree found only in south India and Sri Lanka.
It is a tree growing up to 12 m tall, branchlets covered with yellow velvety hairs. Leaves are alternate or nearly opposite. They are elliptic-ovate to fiddle- shaped, 6-15 cm long, 3-9 cm wide, with a 5 cm long stalk. Figs occur in leaf axils, either in pairs or in clusters. They are stalkless, round, up to 8 mm across. Fig wall is somewhat fleshy, brownish, velvety.

A reply from another thread:
Ficus amplissima Sm.

Trunk looks different here………… F. amplissima is a serious straggler with plenty of aerial roots ultimately contributing to main trunk .

Ficus amplissima differs from other Ficus species having aerial roots; with very few aerial roots hardly touch the ground, unlikely in Ficus virens where aerial roots contribute more to main trunk.
F. amplissima has main trunk gregarious, light coloured, pale-green whitish or greyish, often marked with vertical clefts and smooth.
Ficus mollis has tomentose branchlets, and leaves spirally arranged.

The leaves of Set 1 do not have have a pointed tip like F. amplissima as per the pics in eFI. They seem to have a more rounded tip. Hoping to get further inputs.

Set 1 is most likely Ficus amplissima.

This should be Ficus amplissima, leaf apex is acute not acuminate (Ficus virens).

Took out this Ficus seedling growing from under my Sintex tank; I could not get the hole roots out, but managed some of them and I planted it in a polybag and it after 2 weeks began sprouting new leaves. It is locally (Telugu) known as Juvvi. The fruits are eaten but many species of birds. The bark of adult trees is pale greenish-yellow and smooth.
Sorry again I do not have picture of adult trees, but next time I’ll take some pictures of some adult trees, leaves, fruits etc.
Date/Time- July 2011

Habitat- Garden/ Urban/ Wild/ Type- Wild, Urban habitat
Plant Habit- Tree/ Shrub/ Climber/ Herb-  Seedling
Height/Length- 7-8 inches
Leaves Type/ Shape/ Size- Simple

If I was to hazard a guess, I would say this is Ficus amplissima [F.tsiela].

Yes F. amplissima (bark greenish)

Ficus amplissima, fruits stalkless and the species can very much be confused with Ficus infectoria….but the differences are:
1. bark greenish, yellow (greyish in F infectoria)
2. fruits stalkless (stalked in F infectoria)
3. fruits black when mature (white in F infectoria)
4. there is some difference in leaf outline also but the difference is slight (the leaf margins are more parallel in F. infectoria whereas the margins are more rounded in F. amplissima) the difference can be observed when both the leaves are held together…

Ficua amplissima ?

Ficus amplissima resembles a lot with Ficus virens. When I take a look, It is leaves by which I can differentiate the two ……..
F. amplissima leaf margin is straight line, color is black-grey-green, Ficus virens leaves are green…..or yellowish green with wavy/ undulating margin.
To me this specimen looks like F. amplissima.

Is this F. virens? Requested to please provide ID.

I also think closer to images at Ficus virens

I agree

Ficus amplissima to me

Thanks … for the ID. F. virens and F. amplissima confuse me a lot.I have still not learnt.

you are not alone. me too. so … please tell us

Yes, they are easy to confuse especially as in the Mumbai area they both grow in the same forests. It is much more difficult to differentiate from pictures than from the tree itself.
Leaf venation differs, the colour of new foliage in each species is distinct, the colour and texture of the bark in each is different.

This should be Ficus amplissima.

next we must take on leaf venation as a must photograph esp in cases of such trees that have leaves etc as main feature and not spectacular flowers. So … if you and when you go back to this Udyan. take the back of the leaf pictures

Yes …, will do so. And thanks … for the ID.
