WoW… very nice pictures … this is an important plant to me as it is Larval Host Plant of Leaf Blue butterfly… I ll search for this plant in Yeoor hills…. as I see this butterflythere very often. Thnx for sharing beautiful pics.

… would like to add query to this post.
Though this plant is known to be distributed in Indo-Malesian region, not much about it is discussed on internet. I am not sure of its distribution in India. Keen to know about its common names in Konkani, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu.

Nice Find and good photographs. I remember spotting Olax sp. at CBD Belapur Hills. Kindly have a look at link.

Thanks …
According to Dr. Almeida’s ‘Flora of Maharashtra’, Vol. 1, pages 235 – 236, two species of Olax are found in Maharashtra.
1. Olax imbricata – a large much branched unarmed scandent shrub or small tree with 2 cm. drupes oblong or subglobose, covered except at the top by the accrescent calyx. It is found at Amboli, Khandala, Mumbra, Pune, Tungar & Khopoli.
2. Olax psittacorum [previously O.scandens] a climbing, much branched shrub armed with slightly curved stout prickles on the old woody branches. It bears drupes which are globose, 9 mm in diam., apiculate, covered except at the top by the accrescent calyx. It is seen at Amboli, Khandala, Mumbra, Satpuda, Aurangabad & near Nagpur.

Thanks, … But none of the sources at Olax supports this. Pl. check for yourself.

When was Dr. Almeida’s ‘Flora of Maharashtra’, Vol. 1, published ?- Was it in 1996 ?

Thanks … for the information.
Would like to have … put his thoughts too. He has covered Olax psittacorum in his books.

Just spoke to …

– 3 species of Olax occur in India.
– the 2 species found in Maharashtra are O.imbricata & O.psittacorum.
– a third species, a herb [whose name he could not offhand remember] is found in North India.

Thanks, … I will request you to pl. go through the links at Olax (Pl. click)

the photo of the fruiting tree you posted on eflora of India is Olax imbricata. It’s actually more of a rambling/climbing shrub. The fruits are sweet and edible.
