Continuing with my posting from Kulgi, Anashi WLS, karnataka. Here’s the fruitng of Olea dioica seen on 26 April, ’10 at Anashi. the toothed margins of the leaves clearly seen in this case. I have seen some leaves of the same tree at Matheran, Mah., where the margins are not so toothed, infact our observation has been that the leaves are quite variable. From my added link you can see the variation of leaf margin morphology in this plant.
http://www.biotik.org/oleadioi/oleadioi_en.html You come up with really nice new plants. I have seen a lot of Olea europea in California but not this Olea. Thank you … … thanks for the link too. Sir you should visit Matheran near Mumbai where this species seen a lot. Indeed. This is a new tree for me too. Thank you … Good to know I could show you a new tree. Would Olea europea be able to survive in Indian climate? Olea europaea performs best in Mediterranean to desert climates. It performs poorly where humidity is high, but tolerates extreme heat. Thanks … for this info. It is quite possible that some forest in India may be having a species or two of this. Not in forests but a few trees may be planted in some hilly areas.

There is one tree in Vijay Ghat, many inside Italian Embassy and lots in Embassy of Holy sea. With scorching heat in Delhi right now please don’t expect me to venture out to seek this plant. Wait for weather to cool down. In the mean time if you want to get satisfied with my California plants of Olea europea, here are they. Yes sir, possibly in areas like Rajasthan. The first two pictures are Olea dioica and the last two pictures are of a different species Thanks .. I also thought so.
Actually I remember I had collected this specimen from the same tree for close up photography later which I did on reaching home late in the night. Somehow it appears different here (Last 2 photographs). At least I am happy to know the tree whch I was trying to identify for a long time. It (leaf) is not necessarily be serrate always. I have seen both serrated and non-serrated leaves on the same individual. But serrated leaves is a character of this species. In younger plants the leaves are always serrated. Do you remember whether the second set of pictures are of a liana (woody climber)? Yes. It is the area with many lianas. You may be on the right track. Waiting for the lead …. Then I have a wild guess that this could be a Rhamnacean such as species of Ventilago! Please check this link http://www.flickr.com/photos/dinesh_valke/photostream/ Thanks for the inputs.
