Orchid for ID, from Thrissur: Please help to identify this orchid
Collected from Sholayar, Thrissur (01.05.2011)

This would be Epipogium roseum, a saprophytic orchid.

Yes this is Epipogium roseum as .. sir says. Saprophytic term has been removed from botany now and it is believed that there are no plant in the world which is a true saprophyte. The term which is now a days used is Myco-heterotrophic that means the plant is parasitic on fungi.

Epipogium roseum (D. Don) Lindl. from Orchidaceae
Location: Tilari (On the from Chandgad-Savantwadi)
Date: 26th June, 2012.
Epipogium Gmelin et Borkhausen is a small genus containing three species of saprophytic orchids.
E. roseum (D.Don) Lindl. is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical Asia, Australia and Africa (Luo and Chen 2002).
It usually appears on thick humus on wet deciduous forest floors protected by a dense canopy.
One of the beautiful, saprophytic Orchid.

This is very pretty. We saw it recently in Laos too.

You much check the underground parts to confirm the species. We have Epipogium roseum and Epipogium aphyllum in India. Aphyllum has coralloid root where as roseum has tubers with rings.

Thanks, … Appears close as per images at Epipogium roseum

Epipogium roseum.

I am afraid it may not be E. roseum

Hope you are fine. I understand your indication. However, Epipogium roseum is very widespread and highly variable and that’s why it already has so many synonyms including two from India, E. sessanicum and E. indicum.
