Gastrochilus acaulis (Lindl.) Kuntze, Revis. Gen. Pl. 2: 661 1891. (Syn: Cleisostoma acaule Lindl.; Gastrochilus indicus Garay [Illegitimate]; Gastrochilus nilagiricus Kuntze; Gastrochilus pulchellus (Wight) Schltr.; Saccolabium acaule (Lindl.) Hook.f.; Saccolabium nilagiricum Hook.f. [Illegitimate]; Saccolabium pulchellum (Wight) C.E.C.Fisch.; Vanda fimbriata Gardner ex Thwaites; Vanda pulchella Wight); . Zanhe (1996) in the Revision of Gastrochilus writes: Blade of the epichile acute at apex, sometimes with short hairs on both sides of cushion; hypochile with peg like projection at the bottom of the interior….. Gastrochilus acaulis Blade of the epichile widely emarginate at apex, without hairs on upper surface, lacking project at the bottom of interior ……. Gastrochilus flabelliformis . Kindly identify this Gastrochilus sp (Orchidaceae)…..My observation is that the floral parts are not speckled or mottled as in G.acaulis or in G.calceolaria and the flowers are a bit smaller. Could it be Gastrochilus flabelliformis….??? Not sure. Date:04-03-2016 Those leaves are not in natural condition. Its not so easy to confirm. I may guess this to be Gatsrochilus flabelliformis but not sure. More likely to be Gastrochilus acaulis but lets wait for … confirmation. Gastrochilus is not so easy, but I can see the wing on the epichile has fimbriate margin even at the front which is same in case of pics by … So I do think … is right in calling this as Gastrochilus acaulis. There are many colour variants in Gastrochilus. Gastrochilus as illustrated by Sathish Kumar sir in the Memoirs of Seidenfaden (page 191) doesnt have fimbriate wing at the tip of epichile, infact there is no wing on the tip and central disc of epichile is kind of blunt at the apex. The pic he provided is dark in colour but as i said earlier colour varies. Gastrochilus flabelliformis Hope this helps. You can check if there is a peg like thing inside the spur if you still have the samples. I dont see any hairs on the upper surface of your flowers but blade of epichile looks acute at the apex (not really acute but ok)….. I think this is Gastrochilus acaulis (Lindl.) Kitze . Who identified this orchid? It is very interesting….. I must say, somehow it doesnt match to anything from south and it could be a new species!! This is obviously a deformed plant. If the character is consistent, then may be a new species or subspecies. Otherwise I will call this Gastrochilus flabelliformis. Sorry my friend who is an expert of this genus says this is Gastrochilus acaulis. I was confused about this. .
