Centranthera indica (L.) Gamble , Fl. Madras 971 1924. (syn: Capraria rigida Buch.-Ham. ex Hook. fil.; Centranthera brunoniana Thw.; Centranthera hispida R. Br.; Centranthera procumbens Benth.; Digitalis stricta Roxb.; Razumovia hispida Britten; Razumovia indica (L.) Alston; Rhinanthus indicus L.) as per efi thread;

India, Sri Lanka, Nicobars (North Nicobars, Great Nicobar Isl., Little Nicobar Isl.), Australia (Western Australia), peninsular Malaysia (once from Selat Panchur, Langkawi Isl.), Myanmar [Burma] (Mandalay, Taninthayi), Malesia, Indonesia, Indochina as per Catalogue of life;

After detailed study the only main difference that I found between two is the length of Corolla which is much longer in C.indica (2-2.5cms long) than C.cochinchinensis var. nepalensis (1.5cms long) .
Also the matured plants of C.cochinchinensis var. nepalensis can remain as small as to 5cms whereas the plants are larger (more than 10cms) in C.indica.
Moreover C.indica is much widespread species reported from South India to Australia while C.cochinchinensis var. nepalensis only occurs near the Himalayas.

Herbs 10-20cm tall, erect or diffuse, scabrid, hairy,; stems 4 angled. Leaves nearly sessile, 1.2-3.0 x 0.3-0.8 cm, oblong lanceolate, hispid hairy on both sides, apex acute or obtuse. Flowers reddish purple, axillary, solitary, or in terminal spikes; calyx densly hairy. Capsule 0.9 cm oblong.

Diffuse, densely hispid herbs; roots orange-yellow. Leaves basally opposite, upper ones alternate, 1-2 x 0.5-0.8 cm, elliptic, oblong or linear-oblong, base rounded, apex obtuse or acute, hairy on both sides, sessile. Flowers subsessile, axillary, solitary; bracteoles 2. Calyx 5-10 mm long, spathaceous, oblique, split on one side, faintly 3-5-lobed at apex. Corolla rose coloured or white, tube long, incurved, dilated above, lobes 5, subequal, spreading. Stamens 4, didynamous, included; filaments villous; anthers transverse, base mucronate. Ovary globose; style simple. Capsule 4-7 x 3 -5 mm, ovoid, loculicidal, covered by persistent calyx lobes, dark brown. Seeds c. 1 mm long, oblong-cuneate, striate.

Centranthera indica is distributed in Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal and Sri Lanka. In Bangladesh, this species is found in Dinajpur, Gazipur and Sylhet (Rahman 2006). In India, it is found in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In Madhya Pradesh the species is reported from Dhar and Jhabua districts (Singh 1997), Koyna valley in Koyna; Mahabaleshwar, Shirshingi; Wada, below Mahabaleshwar (Deshpande et al.1993), Alibagh; Bhise-Khind, Roha; Matheran; Sarasgad, Pali in Raigad district of Maharashtra (Kothari and Moorthy 1993), Nilgiri of Tamil Nadu (Henry and Chitra 1987). In Kerala, the species is reported from all districts (Sasidharan 2004).
It is an errect herb found in marshy places (Singh 1997). It is a common annual among grasses in open lands (Deshpande et al.1993).

Please idenify this small herb – NS 080911:
Photographed at my farm at Shahapur last weekend.
Please identify this small herb [20 – 30 cms tall] found in an open grassland with alternate leaves and flowers about 2cms in size.
Though it may be a species of Sopubia, it is not S.delphinifolia and it is also not the Oriental Sesame [S.orientale].

Leaves at branch tip can be alternative in Centranthera. This looks like species of Centranthera to me too.
Check for the leaves at the base that should be opposite.
