ID FOR THIS PLANT: I think this nir brahmi may be iam wrong pls send me the correct botanical name.

Bacopa monnieri, I think.

Bacopa monnieri for me as well. The photo is hazy. It would have been better if you have posted a better photograph.

yes for me too Bacopa monnieri, medicinal plant, local name Nir Brahmi, (Nir means water), plant found near water body

yes, Brahmi, simply brahmi for local green med vendor in kolkata bazaars… hence in colloqiual tongue as well..

agree with … if it was with call phone nothing to be done..
But if its a digital camera, even if a point and shoot now a days they have such a lot of features …
If I may suggest… FOR ALL WHO USE DIGITAL CAMERAS….
I have found out with these new point and shoot digital camera that have so many features…
to use macro, turn on the feature caled macro, then the main dial to the basic P mode… than things in macro range will be in focus, otherwise blurred and stuff out of macro range will be in focus!!!!
or if your camera has a dedicated flower mode, it will be indicated with a small icon that looks like a tulip or a rose…
I learned it the hard way one day nothing was in focus, even in macro turned on… but I was in other modes than P ….
it may be different in your cameras.. so play with it… and check results… that’s so nice about digital cameras.. and no film wasted.
Pl. find the attached file contain photos for id. request.

Hooghly Today : Bacopa monnieri (Linnaeus) Pennell:
This seems to be the Gratiola monnieria L. of the Flora Indica = Bacopa monnieri (Linnaeus) Pennell, of FoC and GRIN = Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst. of The Plant List.

The Bengali name mentioned in the Bengal Plants, Flora Indica and Hortus Suburbanus Calcuttensis is ADA-BURNI (ADHA-BIRNI).
I found this herb in a lowland which remains submerged half the year.

You are right, this is Bacopa monnieri (L.) Pennell [ Synonym Herpestes monnieria (L.) Kunth as you found in Bengal Plants by Sir David Prain]. The supporting characters which are found in your photographs for confirmation of this species are: creeping habit, obovate, oblong or spathulate ( spoon-like) leaf lamina, entire leaf with obtuse apex, long pedicelled flower, purple tinge present within the corolla tube, presence of 4 didynamous stamens included within the corolla tube and white colored flower.

In this species the diagnostic features are entire leaves, sub-equal corolla lobes which are generally uncommon in Scrophulariaceae members.

This marshy herb is succulent when fresh, little bitter in test and very popular memory enhancer as prescribed in Ayurveda. It is known as “Brahmi shak” in Bengali. People usually eat this herb as making pakora or fried simply in clarified butter (ghee).

Neer brahmi (Bacopa monneiri):
I am from Mumbai and like to grow Neer brahmi. I searched lots of
nurseries in Mumbai, but they keep the other brahmi (Centella). If anyone has any idea where I can get it in Mumbai, please let me know.

One of my innovative herb growers is cultivating Bacopa with Acorus as mixed crops. (Please see attached pictures). I will request him to send fresh plants to you.
In 2005, when I was invited as guest speaker in International Conference organised by Jadhavpur University I got opportunity to meet well known activist Vasudha Joshi. In his terrace garden I found Bramhi plants. Her family consume it daily as Chutney during meals. She informed that it is common in Kolkata families.

neer brahhmi as chutney! this tickles me as well as excites me.

Try not , I repeat NOT to eat Neer Brahmi Chutney… its done RAW… and neer brahmi needs a lot of mud and muck to grow… human parasite eggs and cysts abound… in “natural” spots from where this brahmi is collected and sold in markets…
Boiled, its a nice accompaniment to rice…and veggies… is also hygienic…
One way one can perhaps eat it raw is wash wash wash in water…. then soak for at least 20 minutes in potassium permanganate and then wash wash wash wash….
too much work ….
OR GROW YOUR OWN IN A BALCONY ..pots and pots of them to make chutney enough for a family of our… one meal…
ps … I just plant the semi woody bottom half of the twigs from the bunches I buy in the market… though they do not root as easily as the mint does, it does do well esp in june, july with monsoon rains… needs high humidity… I have done it as a curiosity, not to raise a crop.

“human parasite eggs and cysts abound.”
…, in commercial Farming of Medicinal and Aromatic crops we use cow dung and cow urine based Traditional Formulations. Also adopt FFCDS method i.e. Freshly Fermented Cow Dung Solutions just before harvest. My American friends show great surprise when they see the use of animal’s excreta in sacred way. They talk about “human parasite eggs and cysts abound”. They are true to their theories but as you know in India cow dung and urine are in use since time immemorial without any harm like that.
Please write “Eat chutney but collect the plants from clean spots specially in Metros.” Thousands of families are consuming it with different combinations without any harm.
By the way have you ever checked the drinking water supplied to your home by Kolkata municipal corporation? It may also contain “human parasite eggs and cysts abound.” Then you cannot stop or recommend “Try not , I repeat NOT to Drink Water—–!!!!!!!!!

Yes you are right…
we do tell every patient that has a parasite or “GUT” problem… and all Kolkatans almost do…or anybody with half a brain and self preservation instinct…. we tell them… is almost a medical rule.. TRY NOT NOT DRINK WATER out of the taps as is… boil it for 20 minutes…
in our family it always was for most of the last century… until these high quality filters and uv irradiation came in and RO filtering systems… which remove most of physical pathogens… the jury is still out on viruses … but there you have it…

==
not all the brahmi or any other saag for that matter is from controlled farming… the neer brahmi we have in our markets oftem comes from some little old lady plucking it off of the banks of local pukur… in south 24 paraganas…. our durvaa ghas for daily puja often comes from our own sidewalks where at 4 to 5 am you will find my neighbors walking their dogs… you just imagine what the durvaa ghas is going to be contaminated with….

I think I will go the Maharashtra Nature Park which is nearest to me and If I get the Brahmi,

Just in case you need quantity or somebody else need then Maharashtra Nature Park, Mahim nursery keep neer brahmi and few other medicinal plants too. Nursery timing till 4.00 clock but I suggest one should reach by 2.30. nursery is open all days except public holidays. Central suburb Sion is nearest.)

This is an aquatic plant and it is better to carry it with sand otherwise within one night, it will get wilt. and may not survive.

.

Names above are mostly reliable when in original script. Names with reference numbers are also reliable, the more ref. the better. Names which should have a scripted match but don’t, and have no ref. number are only there to encourage further searches for reliable scripted names.
Brahmi” is applied to Centella asiatica (L.) Urb. in Northern and Western India but defines Bacopa monnieri (L.) Pennell in Kerala (Southern India). (ref. McGuffin et al. 2000)
Mandukaparni” applies to Bacopa monnieri (L.) Pennell in Northern and Western India but defines Centella asiatica (L.) Urb. in Kerala. (ref. McGuffin et al. 2000).
It is stated on the Maharishi Ayurveda site : “Two main herbs (Herpestis Monniera, Bacopa Monnieri ) go by the name of Brahmi in the ancient Ayurvedic texts. Some experts from The Council of Maharishi Ayurveda Physicians feel that Herpestis Monniera is more authentic and is preferable for mental benefits except where urinary flow, purification, and immunomodulation is desired by the physician.
The other herb that commonly goes by this name is more popularly known in the U.S. as Gotu-Kola, or Centella asiatica, called Mandukaparni.”
Unfortunately modern scientists have lumped both plants (Herpestis monniera and Bacopa monnieri), if ever there were 2 distinctive plants involved, in the same bag- i.e. they are considered as synonyms.

I have a plant growing in our balcony. The leaves are very good for memory. I will upload a photo soon.

Bacopa:  For those interested I have integrated all comments into this page. Please let me know if I have forgotten a comment of yours. It is by no means completed so if you know of a scripted name matching a romanized version of it, please post it on this forum.
plantnames.unimelb.edu.au
It is not all “gospel”, so please point out the spelling mistakes as well.
Finally if you know how to quote the string of postings related to this topic, please let me know.

Telugu script is missing in the above link. I am giving Telugu version for the words you used. ” Sambrareni aaku” I dont think is it is a valid word therefore I not posting teugu script for it.

Thank you very much for this valuable contribution. “Sambrareni aaku” comes from FRLHT ENVIS which tend to have many versions of the same name (some more correct than others), especially in Tamil. Could it be a spelling error? For example Sambraani aaku? or anything else?
I’ll indicate that this is a suspicious name but keep it for the record (” Sambrareni aaku“).
I’ll wait a while for other contributions and post the final result later on the forum. Meanwhile you can keep on checking the previously mentioned URL.
Once again thank you this is great work.

Bacopa monnieri leaf margin : 3 posts by 2 authors.

1. Please check the picture taken in Florida upload.wikimedia.jpg
Please note that this is NOT my picture.
2. Please check pictures of our site /species/m—z/p/plantaginaceae/bacopa/bacopa-monnieri
Please inform if though the plant is Bacopa monnieri in all above links, the leaf margin of non-indian Bacopa monnieri is dentate.
But leaf margin of Bacopa monnieri cultivated in my home and all the pictures in the links of our efloraofindia has entire margin.
Is this a case always observed?

According to this link, the leaf margin should be entire but rarely it will be dentate.
/species/m—z/p/plantaginaceae/bacopa/bacopa-monnieri
also makes mention that the leaf margin may be dendate (rarely).

Thank you so much …, Yes links says so. The query was as –
is there regionwise difference observed in leaf margin of Bacopa monnieri.
I mean to ask that does the Indian Bacopa monnieri has entire leaf margin?
And does the florida Bacopa monnieri has dentate leaf margin?
I had Bacopa monnieri, all leaves had entire leaf margin. Even pictures of our site  /species/m—z/p/plantaginaceae/bacopa/bacopa-monnieri which were spotted in India has entire leaf margin.
Just a observation, may be not true as i have observed very few saplings till today.
