POEACEA ID from Bangladesh SM 186: (Mixed thread): 8 posts by 3 authors. 4 correct images as above.

More than one species in this set, perhaps three? White ones is Imperata cylindrica (L.) P.Raeusch., _b_dec11080084 (182)_resize.JPG is a Setaria sp, _b_dec11080084 (163)_resize.JPG is Pennisetum species.
Please wait for experts.

This makes trouble, please read _b_dec11080084 (163)_resize.JPG is a Setaria and _b_dec11080084 (182)_resize.JPG (single spike) is Pennisetum.

First two images seems to be Pennisetum pedicellatum and others Imperata cylindrica but image no. (116) confused with Saccharum spontaneum

1-2: Pennisetum spp.
3-7: Imperata spp.

1. Pennisetum glaucum

2. Pennisetum sp.
116. Saccharum spontaenum
22, 118 and 142 are of Imperata cyllindrica

163 – Pennisetum pedicellatum

182- Pennisetum polystachyon
55,118,22,142 – Imperata cylindrica
2669,116 – Saccharum spontaneum

Grass week : AR 07: Chandagal, Mysore
15 May 2010
Habitat: Lake edge
Height: 70cms, No leaves observed

Picture taken in Asansol (W.B.) on 05/06/11 time 05:59 PM. Locally it is called as kaansh. I have searched for the Botanical name & found it to be Saccharum spontaneum. I’m a bit confused also because kaansh flowers come around Durga Puja (say Sept-Oct) Please correct me if I’m wrong.

The broader leaves to me look to be that of Typha
The plant with inflorescence is much smaller than Saccharum and should be Imperata cylindica

Ths is NOT KASH PHOOL
NOT JUST TIMING… anatomy of the inflorescence (now seed cluster) is more delicate, much shorter and the white tufts of the seeds are very delicate here, not so in kash phool… I have some photos of kash phool… will upload  later when I find them and time

this is Imperata cylindrica. The cottony inflorescence with “things” entangles, the small height…. it doesnot necessarily flower only during autumn-durga pooja. It is called “chhoto kaash” or small kaash sometimes

I am here with enclosing Saccharum spontaneum  photographs

Here with enclosing Imperata cyllindrica  photograps

THE PICTURES POSTED BY …. need some clarification.
1. The pictures posted as Saccharum spontaneum is actually Saccharum ravennae.
2. The pictures labelled as Imperata cyllindrica are actually of Pennisetum sp. I am not sure about the species.
