The racemes of S.spontaneum are simple and unbranched, whereas S.bengalense has branched racemes looking like a panicle. S.spontaneum has silvery white inflorescence whereas S.bengalense has pinkish inflorescence turning white later on. S.spontaneum has a running growth whereas S.bengalense are found in thick clumps.

Saccharum ravennae has become rather rare nowadays may be due to filling up of terai grasslands and expansion of roads. It is a very tall grass and can be identified by the small awn projecting out of the spikelet in addition to the hairs. It has decompound panicles (branched and rebranched) whereas S.spontaneum has unbranched panicle branches almost like a raceme. The leaves of Saccharum ravennae are also broader. The panicles are purplish in S.r and silvery in S.spontaneum.

Place : Hooghly Nice pictures … yes no other grass is like this….the culms were used by us in primary school days as “Kalams”…nice pictures… Kuus ghash? This is KAASH or KESHE, very common in lowland and waste land, some attaining 15 feet height.
KUUS ghas is Desmostachya bipinnata Staff., i am yet to find one. The best pic, of my collection, that I took during my stay at Kanha. Saccharum of Kanha: I stand corrected that these grasslands were not planted but already existed before. The upper one is Narenga porphyrocoma (Saccharum narenga). Here is a picture of Saccharum spontaneum from Bandhavgarh.

Poor quality photos while the sun is setting, and to top it – they are of grass !! Guessing it may be Saccharum spontaneum. The small colonies were seen in a few spots in the park, in vicinity of a small stream. To me also appear close to images at Saccharum spontaneum

Saccharum ?? Yes. Saccharum spontaneum . Grass for Id -ID241023SH2: 2 high res. images. Which is this grass species seen everywhere in the U.P. and Bihar side ? What is it called in the local language ? Is it grown intentionally in the farms as a fodder ?
Location – Vaishali, Bihar
Date – September 2023 Saccharum spontaneum – locally called Kans – It grows as a weed through its long stolons and rhizomes and is found on riversides and sandy soils. It invades farms also. It is not grown as a fodder. But the young leaves and soft new rhizomes are eaten by elephants. The stems are used to make mats, thatching, etc. The grass is good habitat for birds and wild animals to take shelter, make nest, etc. Last year I had seen same type of grass in Prayagraj region but it was pinkish in colour. Local person told me they call this ‘दीनानाथ घास’ and it is used as a fodder too. I just wonder whether this is the same genus but different species. Both must be from Poaceae. .
