Polemonium coeruleum

It is present in category of “Healing Flora of Ladakh” in my database. Promising remedy for Rheumatism. … can throw more light on it.

Yes .. Plant is supposed to be sudorific and astringent. Alcoholic extract of roots shows expectorant action superior to that of Senega (Polygala senega) for which it can be used as substitute. Roots are also sedative. The ancient Greeks used the root to treat dysentery, toothaches and animal bites.

Very nice to see this plant again, in India
I know this plant as Jacob’s ladder, quite popular to plant as a perennial in woodlands , it come bursts forth after snow melts…Do you have pictures of the leaves?
Since the name of this plant is mythological; story is Jacob dreamt of a ladder with alternate rungs in a ladder-
like contraption, rising from ground and going skyward allll…lll the way up to the heavens… the leaves are arranged as if they are forming this ladder of Jacob’s dreams… I always loved this myth… a tiny plant ascribed duty to carry one heavenwards…

Interesting mix of medicinal claims, if they can be verified by modern science…

…, there are leaves below in the picture. I had known about the mythological Jacob’s Ladder but never knew its connection with this.
Thanks for the enlightenment. I was thinking there are many plants with similar leaves, then why this particular plant??? May be because it is found at higher elevations close to sky !! Or may be it is such
a sedative that it gives you relief like heaven :P…

Here are more of leaves from Kashmir.

Thanks …, these are the types of exuberant leaves that I have seen in NYBG and even in my own garden… way back when… that’s what I was after… to match up with my memory…
…: dont remember the exact history… but there are several books on Plants of the bible, may be your library has some.. if you find it , xerox the page and send it in, I would love to see the history…I dont have access to such rare books here in Kolkata…

Polemonium caeruleum ??

I doubt. the flowers are very large. Probably, other type…

Can you suggest ??

P. occidentale or P. laxiflora, or P. acutiflora

I don’t know if the (Jammu&Kashmir) listed species are found there…

Neither any of three as suggested by you matches with he specimen nor have they distribution in India !

This is Polemonium caeruleum subsp. himalayanum as per images and details herein.
