Yes Antigonon leptopus from Polygonaceae
the plant is known to have caducous ochreate stipule

Difficult to have local names as it is an introduced ornamental, unless some one has coined some local name.

Sonchampa, Pivla champa, Kud champa in marathi

Thank you … for trying to help with the Marathi name but I think these names are of Chapha flowers Michelia champaca of Magnoliaceae

Yes I don’t think the names suggested by … should fit this plant
Son champa is Mar. name for Michelia acuminata
Pivala champa and kud champa  are Mar. name for Michelia champaca, also pilo champo and rae champo in Guj.

… is absolutely right….
Champa is a name reserved for  usually fragrant flowers in any Indian vernacular…
Where as, this (Antigonon)  is 1cm or less small NON_FRAGRANT flower… on a vine… its called coral vine in English… native of mexico  was brought in to India / Bengal during the same time as when the original botanical garden was started in Calcutta… via Bermuda and /or Jamaica…  where its tea is drunk as original NSAID . and underground tubers were eaten in times of famine…
I have not found a traditional name here, although I must say we in Bengal are very fond and efficient at adapting  a plant/ flower we like and giving it romantic name/s… such as Krishnachura for another import of recent century… Delonix regia..

Antigonon leptopus from Jaipur:
Antigonon leptopus from a private garden @ Jaipur. Dated- 07.11.11
Common name-Coral Vine , Family- Polygonaceae

am so glad to see it thriving…
for some reasons … the Antigonon leptopus populations in West Bengal have dwindled , almost not seen any vine that’s thriving… a few are struggling… haven’t seen any that have fruits/seeds on them..

The climber grows wild in Chennai in pink / white coloured flowers.
One can see this climber, during this season, everywhere.

I have tried this to grow from stem cuttings and tubersin my college, can anybody give idea how to propagate this vine

… by seeds is the best way..
I had collected seeds from a friends’ garden fence in 1993 in central florida, and let them dry, stored them in red topped sterile test tubes with airtight stoppers at RT …. and in 1996 or 1997 spring planted them… in 1998 summer had a thriving flowering vine in my 6-8 gallon soilless potting mix pot in my balcony, over-wintered inside (it snows where I was) … after flowering though it died in the pot, and I wanted to reuse the pot and to my surprise found tubers… I cut open the tubers to photograph… so cant tell you if they would grow or not… BUT from what I read… tubers are used for famine food in its native central and south america and the tubers sprout to give new vines in case of forest fires… they survive deep inside the soil when every thing else chars… so may be they need heated soil, or very alkaline soil (from the ashes of the vines and other plants) to re-sprout…. or some bacteria or fungi that overtake the burnt forest soil after the fire may release some growth factors….

I wonder if anybody has tested soil for such factors after a forest fire where antigonon grows ??
SEEDS are the best way…. if they are from a thriving vine like this one that … has…
otherwise… semi woody stems and rooting hormone had worked for some
other vines for me… but I have not tried that in India…

… forgot to tell you I had saved one tuber and planted it…next spring..but did not grow…
my garden club friends had thought that perhaps it was not old / large enough…with only one growing season, that too growing in balcony in a pot may not have stored enough energy to re-sprout…

Thanks, …, for these pictures.

very nice. most of these in kolkata gardens died of some virus spreading. we do find them in remote villages and one in by the dhakuria lakes in a private garden. they used to be everywhere 2 or decades ago. my question
did you see any seed pods? any seeds you could collect?

I frequently see this particular specimen every week on my way home every weekend. I did not verify about fruiting. Now that you have asked I will try to get down and observe. Will update you.

in west bengal villages where i has seen some sprawling on the grounds making small mounds. i had been warned not to disturb them since SNAKES are known to hide there. so be careful. distrub themn not and carry a stick to look or better still donrt do it at all.
its not that important. i mean it. Be well. I look for seeds  on these only when they are on the wall or hedges now a days. again be careful

Thanks … for your concern and info as well. As you said this particular creeper was sprawling and spreading, visited by a lot of honey bees even at noon. I will be careful henceforth.

Flora of Panipat: Antigonon leptopus from Paras Nursery Panipat:
Antigonon leptopus from Paras Nursery Panipat
Cultivated vine grown for its pink beautiful flowers

I would like seeds of this plant… something has happened to these plants in Calcutta… I cant find them … there used to be a profusion near the court house in alipore, in my parents neighborhood, and most ballygunj homes has some… along with quis qualis… .. and Tollygunje tram depot was over run with them… but now I cant find them anywhere….   I want some seeds for my balcony 5 or six seeds would do… if your nursery man would not mind… can you ask?

Since last two year every 3rd or 4th day i am visiting Paras nursery for seeds of Antigonon and passiflora . I got some seeds last year but they did not germinated. This vine is again in flowering stage and i am waiting for
seeds to ripen. Surely will collect seeds for me and you also. However this year i could get 10 plants of passiflora from cuttings and two of antigonon  from cuttings. And i found passiflora to propagate by cuttings very easily.
But Antigonon very difficult.

Be careful about Antigonon leptopus.
Once it starts spreading it is difficult to control. It can occupy the whole area growing gregariously and rob all the nutrients.

Antigonon guatimalense :
Antigonon guatimalense Meisn. seems to be cultivated in India as per Floriculture in India By Gurcharan Singh Randhawa, Amitabha Mukhopadhyay (1986) which also gives differences from Antigonon leptopus.
It states that flowers of Antigonon guatimalense Meisn. are more numerous & leaves are broader than those of  Antigonon leptopus. It also states that its flowers are rose coloured & appear to be double.
I hope we are not taking both species as Antigonon leptopus.

Antigonon leptopus

/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/antigonon_leptopus_P1100507.jpg

Thanks …, a lot, didn’t know. Illustrations/images are easier to understand though! Recently recorded one!
The question is when India began to import and cultivate the “guatemalense” and have it ever naturalized here? The antigonon I have recorded ever comes from waste-place or beside rail-tracks.

My post on Symbiosis is of Antigonon leptopus.

As per Flora of Guatemala, the outer sepals of Antigonon guatimalense Meisn. should be broadly ovate and not cordate at the base. Further the leaf base should be abruptly decurrent at the base upon the petiole. The type specimen of A. guatimalense Meisn. can be seen here (http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getImage.do?imageBarcode=K000585039) for confirmation. Hence to me the posted picture appears as Antigonon leptopus Hook. & Arn. only. Experts may comment.

Thanks, …, Is Antigonon guatimalense cultivated or found in wild in India ?

I am still searching for an authentic herbarium sheet/reference that could tell about the existence of A. guatimalense in India.
These books mention the presence of A. insigne in India but without any information of voucher specimens.
Hoping to get information from some eflora members.
