Plumbaginaceae and Primulaceae (Incl. Myrsinaceae) Fortnight- Jacquinia racemosa from Patiala:: NS June 13 : 3 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (6).
This small tree with spiny-tipped leaves was shot from Botanical Garden of Punjabi University Patiala, Punjab.. Flowers were not observed by me, also, due to restrictions, I could not pluck or open a fruit..
The placard says Jacquinia racemosa.. I hope this is right..

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I could not find any match of Jacunia racemosa on google search. I think it has been misspelt.

There are two Genera under Primulaceae namely Bonellia and Jacquinia (both formerly under Theophrastaceae). In Flowers of India, there is one species Jacquinia macrocarpa (http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Jacquinia.html), but the berries are with blunt tip (not pointed as in this figure). In encyclopedia of life, Jacquinia racemosa’s type is placed under Bonellia macrocarpa (http://eol.org/pages/5508526/details). But in the plant list under Bonellia macrocarpa, Jacquinia macrocarpa is treated as synonym but J. racemosa is treated as accepted name.
You may need to check: B. Ståhl and M. Källersjö (2004) . Reinstatement of Bonellia (Theophrastaceae). Novon 14(1): 115-118.
and Ståhl, B. 1995. A synopsis of Jacquinia (Theophrastaceae) in the Antilles and South America. Nordic J. Bot. 15: 493-511.
Hope this will help you in identifying the species!!!

B. Ståhl and M. Källersjö (2004) . Reinstatement of Bonellia (Theophrastaceae). Novon 14(1): 115-118. can be read here…. http://www.biodiversitylibrary.115/mode/1up. There is one old book, trees and shrubs of Mexico nu Paul Standley (http://www.biodiversitylibrary.1206/mode/1up) which deals with various species of Jacquinia… These may be referred.

Jacquinia

Thanks, … I think matches with images at Jacquinia racemosa

Don’t know what is so attractive in this tree, except that it comes from Cuba, an uncommon family member, but with a wrong spelling tag! There is some mystery too, please, see the first two links in the bulleted list.

Jacquinia flowers seen at Jijamata Udyan, Mumbai. Jacquinia macrocarpa as in FOI? Sorry for the bad pictures due to low light and dusty leaves. Kindly confirm id.

Jacquinia ruscifolia Spreng.

Thanks, …,
Eralier post & some other links as below talk of Jacquinia ruscifolia Jacq. (syn. of Jacquinia aculeata (L.) Mez as per Tropicos):
Rare Trees – Horticulture India Kolkata CalcuttaGardening in India By George Marshall Woodrow, G Marshall (1999)
May I request you to pl. recheck & confirm.

I didn’t see its flowers in Alipore Hort. But, leaves do look like the ones in my post. And, a net search doesn’t yield much literature.

Jacquinia ruscifolia Jacq. is a syn. Jacquinia aculeata (L.) Mez as per Catalogue of Life, but does not matches with images and details at

Please see if this can be Jaquinia racemosa

Thank you very much Sir, only you have this one in efI site!

or Jaquinia panamensis? per Univ of Hawaii.. http://www.botany.hawaii.jac_pan_1166.jpg
I photographed it in bloom in 2010 and then in fruits a year or two later, at Shibpur. But its been confusing to id it … so never sent it in.
this is a confusing genus for me …

Nidhan please look at this paper , and tell/us if its a valid argument?
… if you took the catesbaea and this on the same day, I must say you either spent a whole day there or walked very fast…and covered the entire perimeter of the Shibpur garden. Good for you.

Garcinia………?

No idea Sir, never seen any Garcinia

Species so far in efi : Bonellia frutescens (Cultivated) & 4 species of Jacquinia

I thank …. very much as well as many thanks to … for resurfacing all posts. As per the pdf file, in the link provided by …, this should be Bonellia since it has leaves with well developed mucro. Species level ID perhaps not possible in absence of any KEY, and also flowers. It may not be Jacquinia panamensis Lundell for fruits of that species seem to have some depressions at the tips and with small mucro (apiculate).

since Jacquinia and Bonellia are synonyms, our worry now is the species, lets wait till it flowers again

Two species of Jacquinia are listed in IBG-

1) J.berterii with leaves obovate, cuneate at base, rounded at apex
2) J.ruscifolia with leaves broadly lanceolate, acuminate, fls red and fruit elliptic yellow (immature).
Comparing your pics with these species it is more closer to J.ruscifolia.
However, I have not seen any Jacquinia species in my life!

Thank you … I have earlier post of J. ruscifolia Jacq., recorded in Alipore Hort. (KOLKATA)!

Sorry … Only one image.
I found the apex of the leaf interesting… it was like a thorn.. very peculiar.

yes it is Jacquina aculeata. the leaves are with spiny apex. the flowers are deep orange.

Jacquinia ruscifolia Jacq. is a syn. Jacquinia aculeata (L.) Mez as per Catalogue of Life, but does not matches with images and details at

To me it appears to be Bonellia macrocarpa subsp. macrocarpa as per details and references herein.

Jaquinia aristata:
Attached some pictures of a beautiful tree Jacquinia aristata flowering profusely in Rani Bagh, Mumbai.

I think it more close to images and details at Bonellia macrocarpa subsp. macrocarpa rather than those of Jacquinia aristata Jacq. synonym for Bonellia frutescens (Mill.) B.Ståhl & Källersjö at
