Euphorbiaceae Week- Putranjivaceae : Putranjiva roxburghii Wall.:
Our very popular tree Putranjiva roxburghii Wall. synonym Drypetes roxburghii (Wall.) Hurus was in the Euphorbiaceae family is now under the family of Putranjivaceae as per the Kew Plant List. Saw this huge tree in Feb. 2011 at Rani Baug, Mumbai.
This is an evergreen tree, flowers in March -May. Flowers are dioeciuos. Male flowers in rounded axillary clusters on the main or on short axillary branches. Female flowers 1-3 in an axil; pedicels 8- 10 mm long. – am sending some photos of Putranjiva tree. Place : Shegaon, Dt. Buldhana, Maharashtra
Date/time : 18.12.10/2.00 p.m – In your second pictures the characteristic oblique leaves are clearly seen. Oblique meaning shorter at one h. point at the base of the leaf. – I’m adding my pics of Putranjiva roxburgii taken at a park which will probably be destroyed as a Metro station is to come up on its site. Last week I was disappointed to see it closed to the public. Thiru-Vi-Ka park at Shenoynagar, Chennai. – I have few pictures with flowers but can’t say whether male or female. – I think the flowers as seen in the first and last pictures are male. There is a distinction in the pedicels length and pattern and number of flowers of male and female. PUTRANJIVA ROXBURRGHII: Here in our area also this tree considered as sacred Yes, Putranjiva roxburghii, now in family Putranjivaceae. I dont know what and who spread the rumour in Delhi (Lutyen’s) that Putranjiva is highly allergic. In the old bungalows so many trees had been cut I am told. A number of trees when in flower become allergenic (I hope it is the correct word!) especially the pollen part of it.
I hope that the initial phobia of putranjiva has faded. It is a beautiful tree, shiny leaves, long life, shady.
Never heard this, we have huge multiple trees of the same in front of our house and we never felt anything… Kindly help Id this shrub may be it grows to be a tree at a Private society garden at Pune growing at the base of a Banyan tree

I did not followed the whole line and focused on Shrub only (Later developed in to tree could not be focused). Polyalthia suberosa is a shrub. But Dryopetis is a tree. the red “coating ” on the bark… does it wash away? in your pic it looks like the dirt from nearby soil… is it red?/reddish? wash it away and you’ll find the true color… … Thank you for your feedback. The red color of the bark is not from the dirt from nearby soil. The nearby soil is black. I had touched the bark so I am sure about it. And as you rightly said it appears to be a delicate tree Location: Kolkata, India

Likely to be Putranjeeva roxburghii … is right. 2 months back I have sent pics of this tree to get the ID confirmed; courtesy … … I would like to know where exactly this tree is in Delhi; kindly provide information. I have never seen fruits of the tree I have refered; which is there in a Grove – the remnants of the medicinal plant garden of the world famous 17th century ayurvedic physician Sri. Itty Achuthan vaidyan at an obscure village situated in Alapuzha dt of Kerala – where I goes occassionally.. I took the photos of Putranjeeva tree last year in Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, Delhi. I have seen the plant being commonly grown as a hedge plant but never as a tree; so was not sure about its identification. I will go and check if the tree is still there. I need id assistance of following 2 images belonging to Putranjiva? collected from JNU New Campus forest do you have the photos of the entire plant? and its drooping branches? Thank you … for your id help, unfortunately I could not take photo of the entire plant. To me it seems to be Putranjiva roxburghii. Could be. Send better photographs for proper ID. Yes, this is Putranjiva roxburghii, usually cultivated everywhere. Recently an ayurvedic drug has been discovered from the seeds of the plant which is claimed to be an infertility drug or very effective in producing a male child, as per reports published in newspapers.
The fruits are made into garlands and worn on children to drive away all evil. The name Putranjiva is derived from this belief, coined by Nathaniel Wallich in 1826. It appears Putranjiva roxburghii. Kindly go through my BLOG on this plant. Link Nice blog Though the ID is resolved here, I wish to add here a minor information that Putranjiva roxburghii Wall. have male and female plants separate. These pictures are of male plants, female plants have solitary flower in the axil of leaf. this is very important. many cities I surmise opt to plant only male plants like they have done around Kolkata esp near Park circus grounds its surrounded by a very busy five road crossing and numerous side streets No need to search …, The female plant is much more in cultivation that the male plants as an ornamental. Children play with this ghurniphal or ghirni.
Attachments (1) thanks … That’s a lot of beads on the small branch
I have not seen anything like that in street plantings in the roadside.
but I keep a watch on the street putranjiva trees, esp. after some big kaal baisakhi storms and hurricane aila one putranjiva was completely toppled and died at the Kol Bot G in Shibpur and that sort of drew our amateur botanists ‘s interest and we started looking to see if street plantings of putranjiva will fall, and if so will it do with the same frequency as the krishanachura and radhachura trees. the last two have been falling with regular frequency, too many to count. among a list of many others. is this a recent picture? what season is best to find these? Yes, it is Putranjiva roxburghii Wallich. what is shown is male tree, male flowers more crowded and smaller.
I’ve been trying to id this tree from last one year without success.
Pinnate evergreen tree, havent seen any fruits or blooms on it.
My guess is that it’s a close relative of Toona.
Please help in id. I think this can be Putranjiva roxburghii.. The leaves are simple alternate here, and not pinnately compound.. Agree with … Putranjiva roxburghii Wall. [Putranjivaceae]. I had visited Jagtap nursery here in Pune last year to id this and seen Putranjiva tree, but found that its leaves are bit longer than this one. But yes I agree that some of the images on google for Putranjiva are similar to the tree image I have sent. . Is this Toona tree? : 7 posts by 3 authors.
Evergreen pinnate tree. Have seen few in Pune, but haven’t seen any of them bloom or bear fruit. https://drive.google.com/file/MVmc/view?usp=drivesdk Pl. attach the images as per posting guidelines. Is there any way to confirm.

Someone may be planted 1 year back.
Sometimes even images of fertile shoots are difficult to identify without prior acquaintance. How someone is expected to name a sterile material? Drypetes roxburghii In my pics, leaves are not only having serrated at edges, but seems also having very small spines kind of structure. That is the reason, i was more curious for this species. Please take a look at closeup of
In this picture leaf is serrated but not having spine kind of structure on edges Or am thinking too much
I think difference is marginal. You can see more images at Putranjiva roxburghii
Yes. The issue is ‘marginal’, about the margin, prickly or not prickly. So can it be said that Putranjiva roxburghii can have leaves with prickly margins. I did search again on web for prickly margins but not able to get match. Putranjiva is quite common. I suggest collect a twig from a mature tree and scan along with your specimen on a flat bed scanner from both sides. The scanned images will surely clarify. Hmm… You mean all Putranjiva leaves have more or less prickly margins if looked at carefully? You all are sure about Putranjiva. So am taking it as it is.
Do not have scanner but i can understand what you saying.
