I have 2 photos of a flower … it is a query from one of my flickr friends.
To me it looks like Bruguiera gymnorhiza.
Some info:
garlands at a big flower market in Kolkata … garland-makers told that the plant has lots of nectar … the garlands smelled like honey
Please validate.

Links for Bruguiera gymnorhiza:
http://mangrove.nus.edu.sg/text/1054.htm (details with a flower picture),
http://www.botanypictures.bruguieragymnorhiza001.JPG (a flower picture).
To me it looks different or the full flower picture is not posted as something is missing in the centre.

do I consider that you too believe this to be Bruguiera gymnorhiza ?

I can’t say- I just checked the links & gave my remarks on your species.

Daniel Mosquin, who had sent me the query is convinced, and he believes it to be Bruguiera gymnorhiza.
He referred this link particularly :
FOS pg 27 is what I had referred for tentative identification.
FOI has it at: http://www.flowersofindia.BurmaMangrove.html

I think if the sender is convinced, it may be the same as the flower picture is not complete & I am not familiar with similar flowers.
On checking up on net I could not find these flowers used in garlands, though it is quite possible to have them in Kolkata from Sundarbans & Coastal areas nearby.

Efforts of Dinesh ji & confirmation from Daniel Mosquin is now a big story, stumping so many on Id except our own …- see the big story at: http://www.humanflowerproject.com/
Now I recall I think these flowers are used in Kali Temple, Kolkata for garlanding the deity. I will have a close look when I get the opportunity to do so next time in Kolkata.

Daniel happened to remember me and I happened to remember the flower in FOS pg 27 !!
But I wanted to equally make sure that these flowers are commonly used for making garlands in Kolkata.

Please help me with the Tamil name of Bruguiera gymnorhizasigapukokandam in Tamil script (Ref: ENVIS – FRLHT)
It could be perhaps be sigappu-kakandan (Ref: Forest Trees of South India by S.G. Neginhal IFS)

OR may be sigappu-kaakandan (Ref: Flora of Peninsular India)

In the book “Tamil names of botanical names” by Yercaud Ilango, the following Tamil names are used for this plant:
சிகப்பு கொகண்டம் (sigappu kokandam), சிகப்பு காகந்தன் (sigappu kaakandan)
The Plants of Tamil Nadu database records the name Sivappu kaakandal (சிவப்பு காக்கண்டல்) for this species.

Thank you very very much for digging all the names !!!

And many many thanks for pointing to the sources; they will be invaluable for my work.

Belongs to Rhizophoraceae Family, along with other mangrove members such as Rhizophora sps., Ceriops sps.
