Gardenia jasminoides from my neighbour’s garden (Hooghly, WB):

I shot these flowers this evening while i was returning home, exhausted as usual after a long day’s work. These flowers were smiling at me over the boundary wall of my neighbour’s house! In no time i was rejuvenated and clicked them using my camera flash.

Gardenias are beautiful, shrubby evergreen houseplants well loved for their creamy, fragrant blooms.
The shrub that can grow 6-8 ft (1.8-2.4 m) high with almost equal spread.
The leaves are glossy and leathery.
Mature shrubs usually look round, and have a medium texture. This is not a “bloom all at once and it’s over” shrub! It blooms in mid-spring to early summer over a fairly long season.
The flowers are white, turning to creamy yellow as they age, and have a waxy feel.
They have a powerful, sweet fragrance, and can perfume an entire room.
Gardenia is native to Japan, China and India

very nice
you are right about the fragrance
I have two of these in my garden below in our apt…

Attaching the photos of *Gardenia jasminoides* that i recorded on 07/02/2012. We call it GANDHARAJ in Bengali.

I wanted to delete these images because i don’t have any flower pic. But after seeing the post of … (efi thread) I thought otherwise.
I seek … permission to treat it as complementary post.

It is common garden shrub here. But I apologize that I haven’t taken its flower pictures yet. May be in coming months i will be able to get some.

Beautiful shrub … In flower it looks even more beautiful. Just wait for the spring.

Yes Sir. And sweet fragrance too.

This is barely one and a half ft. tall, yet it seems to be the Gardenia florida of the FLORA INDICA.

This would be GANDHORAAJ in English transliteration.

DSCF0761: Attachments (2). There are 2 trees in the first photograh. The rear one is Michelia Champaca. The one in front could be Mohua [a Madhuca sp.].

The front one could be Gardenia resinifera

The tree at the back looks like Mimusops elengi L. and the tree in the front seems to be Gardenia resinifera

To me also the tree in the front looks like Gardenia resinifera.

can anyone plz id this flowering plant? : 7 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (1)
photo taken in MUMBAI, on 21st March 2015, whole plant had bloomed in plenty. I think it is Gardenia jasminoids but I am confused with the variety… am i correct?.. plz help.

Yes, this is what I know as Gardenia jasminoides J.Ellis, leaves and flowers are variable across cultivars. Variation has been noted in FoC and flower form can be seen at
http://plantillustrations.org/species.php?id_species=453475.

Gardenia jasminoides to me too.

Thank you all for confirming the id. One more query., In India do we see fruiting in these plants as in China?

Not yet fortunate to see the fruits.

I too didn’t see any fruit, and these are common here. Similarly, I have never seen any Jasminum sambac fruit. We have both the species for years. One common example is Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, capsules are there in literature, but I think one can hardly have seen those capsules. One my much younger friend, who did his M.Sc. in Botany from CU told me that those china-roses do produce capsules under controlled cultivation. I think decades of propagation by cutting and grafting have made this cultivars reluctant to bear the pain of producing fruits!

The leaves looked different than the ones we see generally, which are pointed at the ends.

it seems different from G. jasminoides?

I understand … concern. But it can still be Gardenia jasminoides. Please compare my set of photographs attached here. Specially note the sepals.

Thanks for your pictures. Very beautiful pictures.
It could be Gardenia jasminoides after all.
The leaves were not pointed at the ends as we usually see. Flower was the same.

Sorry, …, I missed your points regarding the leaf base and apex. I will check again and will inform you if I find any clue. Meanwhile, let’s wait for more feedbacks.
