I think Pentas lanceolata, after getting common name from nurserymen called as petas

You may be right … I was thinking that the corolla lobes are narrower than that of Pentas. But I now know that Pentas shows great variation in color, shape size etc. Even there are 6-7 corolla lobes (http://www.flowersofindia.in/StarCluster.html)

Pentas lanceolata – 061111 – RK: (mixed thread):
2 pics of P.lanceolata taken on 29-10-11 at 9.55am in Bangalore.

its very popular with the nursery folks this monsoon … I have one in my balcony…
blooms only periodically in that situation…
is yours in the garden grounds or in tubs?

forgot to tell you, in california… it seems hummingbirds love it…
a very nice picture is at : http://www.qty.com/anna021213-44.jpg
next time you are in your son’s place… may be you can catch hummingbirds in action like this..

Beautiful photo … and … your humming bird capture is superb. These are also the favorites of butterflies as lots of butterflies can be seen hovering around these flowers. Here is a Orange pentas from Goa.

Excellent combo photograph … The plant is widely used in butterfly gardens. There are several varieties / colours.

That’s nice to know …, my little plant does not have any flowers right now, had them for about a month at end of monsoon here in Kolkata….. It will perhaps rest and then flower again, am feeding it for green growth right now, and may be later will start off to give it some phosphorous rich food to encourage flowering again… tough job to get these things to flower in pots.. but I am hoping that butterflies would discover my plants/ flowers …

The Pentas [gifted to me] is in the only sunny, SMALL, square in my balcony! Am hoping it will attract the v. beautiful butterflies fluttering among the branches/fronds of the Cannonball, Fishtail Palm, B.coccinea, T. pallida, etc.
The pic of Anna’s Hummingbird you have sent makes me feel so nostalgic. A brilliant-coloured hummingbird [ not Anna’s – could not id it ] magically flew in on to a gorgeous Bird of Paradise just 15mnts before i was to leave for the airport – 21/2′ away from me at eye-level.V. frustrating!! I was so flustered – wonder where it was all the time i could have taken shots comfortably!
Here are pics of the Bird of Paradise. The first one was at where the HB was teasingly fluttering/flapping around

Beautiful bird of paradise… they are sooo common in california gardens, aren’t they? Frrustrating , cant seem to ge t them going…here they seem to not like the high humidity, though in Florida the weather was almost like kolkata, I had a large clump… but in India may be I am missing something in the horticultural details…
That hummingbird picture link I sent was a pic taken by a lady who specializes in banding birds for id and studying migration etc … she is also very good with her camera it seems..

June 2012 at Pune
Observed this red insect on the Pentas plant at my home. It was trying to hide under the leaves. Never seen this insect before.

This is a Sheild Bug [Pentatomid bug of Family Pentatomidae].

I think i saw these bugs a number of times but do not know the ID. Your post reminds me this bug once again and i tried to search the ID. How about the probability of the following ? –

Yes the bug in my post looks exactly the same as in the 1st link you have provided. I also gather from the links that it is a pest for some plants and useful to some other plants. From the 2nd link it is a Soyabean plant pest. Fortunately I have no Soyabean plants in my garden so need not worry :). Thanks again for the help. I have seen such green bugs in the past but never brown. The green bugs really stink.
