A small or medium-sized glabrous, deciduous tree, upto 10 m high with corky grey bark having longitudinal wrinkles and sharp, hard, straight, axillary spines 2-3 cm or more long. Branches ascending. Leaves alternate, 3-foliolate, with a resinous odour. Leaflets ovate or linear-lanceolate, rhomboid, acuminate, crenate-serrate, gland-dotted, 5-10 x 3-6 cm, apex acute, oblique or rounded. Flowers in panicles, greenish-white, sweet-scented. Calyx small, deciduous. Petals 4-5, imbricate, oblong, gland-dotted. Stamensnumerous. Ovary 8-20 celled. Fruit a drupe, 5-15 cm in diameter, with a smooth, grey or yellow woody shell and a sweet pulp.
Shot in June 2011 from Shukartaal, a town in U.P. Though I could not get any fruit picture at that time.         Bel is a fruit-bearing tree which is cultivated throughout India, as well as in Sri Lanka, northern Malaya, Java and in the Philippines.
The tree, which is the only species in the genus Aegle, grows up to 15 meters tall and bears thorns and fragrant flowers. Leaves are alternate, pale green, trifoliate; terminal leaflet, 5.7 cm long, 2.8 cm broad, having a long petiole; the two lateral leaflets, almost sessile, 4.1 cm long, 2.2 cm wide, ovate to lanceolate having reticulate pinnate venation; petiole, 3.2 cm long. Flowers, greenish white, sweetly scented, bisexual, stalked; stalk, 8 mm long; diameter of a fully open flower is 3 cm; flowers, borne in lateral panicles of about 10 flowers, arising from the leaf axils. It has a woody-skinned, smooth fruit 5-15 cm in diameter.
The skin of some forms of the fruit is so hard it must be cracked open with a hammer. It has numerous seeds, which are densely covered with fibrous hairs and are embedded in a thick, gluey, aromatic pulp. The fruit is eaten fresh or dried. The juice is strained and sweetened to make a drink similar to lemonade, and is also used in making Sharbat. is a sacred tree, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The offering of bael leaves is a compulsory ritual of the worship of Lord Shiva in the hills. This importance seems largely due to its medicinal properties. All parts of this tree, viz., root, leaf, trunk, fruit and seed, are used for curing one human ailment or another.

Most Fig trees belong to a group called Primary Hemiepiphytes.
A Parasite taps into the vascular system of the host plant for water and nutrients.
An Epiphyte only takes support on the host tree while drawing water and nutrients from wherever they can get them.
A Hemiepiphyte, by definition, switches survival strategy over its lifetime.
A Primary Hemiepiphyte such as a Fig tree begins life as a canopy epiphyte. After a few years having accumulated sufficient reserves, it sends a root abruptly down to earth. Once a connection has been established the plant can now reach a huge size by sending down more roots. In ‘Strangler Figs’ the roots remain plastered against the trunk of the host tree and may coalesce to form a cramped basket around the trunk ultimately crushing it to death. The tree corpse then rots and falls away and the strangler then continues to grow as a regular tree.
In Secondary Hemiepiphytes such as Philodendrons and Monstera– they start at ground level as vines and then work their way up into the canopy. Eventually the vine’s terrestrial roots become redundant and its stem dies at the tree base and the plant continues its life as an epiphyte. It is a temple tree. In the past, in Java many people talked about the name of this plant. Even, it was the name of a kingdom in Java called Majapahit (Aegle marmelos). However I ‘ve never seen this plant. This is the first time for me to see. Is it the normal shape of leaves of the tree, I had doubts about the shape of leaves, so I observed the neighbourhood Aegle marmelos tree. The leaves of the tree were not that much long and Much more sharp (acuminate). As far as Aegle marmelos is concern the leaf shape, size, fruit shape and size will vary from tree to tree frequently

Because in the same region in Junagad i saw one “Bel” tree fully green so i was confused. Off course the fruits were little different (like hybrid). I am new here, and from the USA, but am an avid researcher of ancient India. This picture is from Panchavarnaswamy Temple, taken by a Mr. Praveen Mohan, not myself. I see clearly clusters of three obovate leaves and paired fruits, seeming smooth bark. I expect this is indeed a tree, but could be a shrub. It almost certainly does not grow in this shape naturally. This is exactly it. Please then let me share some knowledge with you. Please do not use this for financial gain, but feel free to tell others. The tree shown in the picture is in the shape of an human brain. The exact point of the brain he is pointing to is the point of kechari mudra, where amrita is tasted. Brahma also is making jnana mudra, while holding the leaves. This indicates that the leaves of this plant are specifically useful for meditation, generation of amrita, and I believe it may also be soma. Brahma, the creator, is indicating the method to create amrita.

I checked up, but it looks different from images at Aegle marmelos Aegle marmelos has leaves compound with three leaflets. It is different, when we analyse the scriptures the meaning ” trigunakara eka bilva” (three in one).
This gives the scope of eka bilva.
I am also researching on this and exploring may aspects.
I the quest of further study, the matter has been out forth.
We have given a few plants to people who have grown in their houses and have found positive response and vibes.
Further study is on Leaves of Passion fruit plant. Did the entire tree have leaves like the one in the photo? The entire tree has these leaves.
