In Nephelium lappaceum, the basal part of fruit appendage is small and inconspicuous and the upper part is thread-like and long; in Nephelium rambutan-ake, on the other hand, the basal part of fruit appendage is relatively large, triangular to ovoid, and tapering towards the short and broad, often thick and stiff apical part.

As per Flora Malesiana:

The only ‘good’ difference between N. lappaceum and N. ramboutan-ake is in the fruit appendages. In the former they have a small and inconspicuous basal part and a long, filiform upper part, whereas in the latter the basal part is relatively large, triangular to ovate in shape, and tapering into a short and broad, often thick and stiff apical part.

Location- Place, Altitude, GPS- Pasghat, East Siang district

Habitat- Garden/ Urban/ Wild/ Type- Collected from the local vegetable market of Pasighat

Plant Habit- Tree/ Shrub/ Climber/ Herb- Dioecious tree reaching 30-45 feet (9-14 m), with a short trunk and a wide, rounded crown. Alternate, compound leaves with 2-5 pairs of glossy leaflets. Flowers small, greenish, in branched axillary or terminal panicles. The fruit is round to ovoid, about 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) in length, with a bumpy red, purple or yellow peel. The pulp is white or yellowish, translucent, juicy, sweet and aromatic, and containing a single seed the size and shape of an almond.

Can be seen growing wild in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
