On a plant id forum I belong to it was suggested that because of the whorled leaves it might be COSTUS.
I am familiar with the flowers, but have never seen it with the seeds.
Is it Costus and if so which one?
Your assistance would be appreciated.

I dont think it is Costus. This could be any Zingiberaceae sps. May be Hedychium sp

My thoughts were also Zingiberaceae.
So, I searched long and hard on www, and the best I could find was Hedychium gardnerianum.
My pics are fairly clear.

I suggested this on the other forum and others thought the leaves were not right.
Which is what brought me here… for local knowledge and expertise.

was this growing wild?
or in a ” garden” ie did it seem planted?
Secondly… in the first picture the leaf head seems to be floating above the surrounding grass and /or weeds..
I dont see a stem.. its anatomy and the size (two dimensions) seem to be important for id.. and ruling out costus…

To the best of my memory it was growing wild. Not planted in a garden.
I realise the 1st pic is rather odd, making it appear to be floating.
The stem must have been hidden by the leaves.
Sadly these are the only pics I took.
I rather naively thought I would be able to id it with ease once I got back home.

This should be a Hedychium sp.
Where is Lava in West Bengal btw?

by the way we pronounce it LABHA …:)

The photo seems to be the fruitung stage of Hedychium gardenarium. In fruiting many spp of Hedychium looks same. Please see whether the lower side in glaucous (white powdery).

I was very eager to know how the flowers looked like.

Id could not be confirmed.
Closest I came to after a lot of searching was Hedychium gardnerianum, common name Kahili Ginger.

why should we forget it, … never say never. there is always someone who knows…

just because i do not recognize the further classification is no reason to give up.
… grows all kinds of gingers, he would be able to recognize the buds and guess what they will mature into. that’s what i was alluding to in my first reply, that some one who grows….etc. and some students in some university studying Medicinal exotic gingers. are i am sure growing them and watching them everyday. life is fun. never give up

it becomes a deal if you copy paste the wrong spelling in google or plant list , kew etc and get no response. correct spelling got me some results. thats why i wrote the post
