Annual herb up to 50 cm tall with simple stem or branched in upper part, glabrous; leaves finely divided into linear segments 1-1.5 mm wide; lower leaves petiolate, upper sessile; flower terminal, up to 25 mm across, red with darker centre; sepals 5-8, ovate to oblong; petals almost twice as long as sepals, oblong to obovate, red with black base, rarely yellow or white; achenes 4-7 mm long, in dense spike.

Adonis aestivalis L. Family: Ranunculaceae
Erect, annual herb, 30-50 cm tall. Stems leafy, simple or branched, nearly glabrous.  Leaves alternate, sessile, pinnately divided into
thread like segments. Flowers scarlet or golden yellow with dark purple eye, solitary at end of branches. Sepals 5, green or slightly coloured, soon falling off. Petals 5 to 8, rather larger than sepals.
