Aerides‘ means ‘one that grows in air’, pointing towards the epiphytic nature of the species. Very rarely they are also seen growing as lithophytic.
Genus is represented by 25 species and one hybrid and it is distributed in tropical and subtropical Asia.
 
In India, the genus is represented by 7 species. Of these, Aerides crispa, Aerides macmorlandii and Aerides maculosa are endemic to India.
