Asystasia gangetica (L.) T. Anderson subsp. gangetica : 1 post by 1 author. 5 images.

Synonym: Asystasia coromandeliana Nees,
                Asystasia gangetica (L.) T. Anderson
                Justicia gangetica L.

Commonly known as Chinese violet (Asystasia gangetica subsp. gangetica) usually has pink, mauve or purplish flowers with paler throats. However, some plants have entirely white or cream flowers with pale yellow throats, and these are sometimes known as Asystasia gangetica ‘Alba’.

This ornamental was recorded from Botanical garden of Punjabi University, Patiala (Punjab)..
Asystasia gangetica

Came across this yellow coloured var. of  “Asystasia gangetica at Nagpur.

Cultivated, garden plant.

Asystasia gangetica ?? from Nagpur.

The ID is correct. See this link. It has medicinal properties.

Asystasia gangetica (L.) T.Anderson from CCSHAU Botanical Garden Hisar

Family Acanthaceae

Seeds for ID 200812 NB1:  in my last trip to india dec.11-jan.12 i collected some seeds in capsules.
I can’t remember now, how the tree lookd like. Perhaps someone can
identify them.

Asystasia gangetica, I suppose.

Thanks a lot …,     so quick response! Thanks also for the link.
I shall try to sow one or two seeds now, it is as hot as in Afrikca, 36 celcius.
If no success, I shall sow in the coming year in spring.

Asystasia gangetica?: From reading the Floras I came to this identification, although some previous posts of this plant had white flowers.
The plant is about 1m tall, straggling amongst bushes and weeds by the side of the road. Photographed in Neral area on 10.10. 2012
Stems quadrangular, leaves in pairs, glabrous w few hairs beneath.
Flowers 3 – 4cm across.
What do you say?

Asystasia gangetica to me too.

I was surprised to see this plant in the wild for the first time.

Acanthaceae member for ID: Saw this weed on roadside. Pune Maharashtra.
Stem square on cross section…
Leaves opposite…ovate….2-2.5 cm.Petiole 0.5 cm.
Mounted section of flower to show 4 stamens diff length.
Gynoecium has fallen and removed.
All these characters suggest Acanthaceae.
Seek identification

is it possible to send a picture of the shrub?

I wud also be glad, if ppl cud write the local names of the Tree / plant/flower

It looks very similar to wayside tuberose (Ruellia tuberosa) of Acanthaceae family.

This is Asystasia gangetica of Acanthaceae, a garden escape.

Asystasia member for ID.29/11/2012 SMP1Pune: A climbing shrub with drooping branches observed on a hedge in Pune.
Leaves opposite glabrescent . 5X3 cm elliptic/ovate base somewhat cordate. Apex acuminate. Stem quadrangular grooved.
Flower 3 cm. Bracts very minute. Pod 2.5 cm nodular.
I think this is Asystasia gangetica. Pl. validate.

I had posted the same plant in october this year on this site and it was validated by … Please search to find my pics.

I searched your wonderful pictures of Asystasia gangetica.
According BSI Mah flora. Flower colour is used as one of the character to differentiate the species. I do not fully agree to it. Because it mentions the flower colour violet pink for A.chelonoides whereas flower colour is said to be white or yellow in the two sp. A.dalzelliana and A. gangetica.
I had recently re posted one of my earlier posts with yellowish white flowers which is also IDed as A. gangetica.
I think ….The important character is the cordate base of the leaves which is unique in A.gangetica. This plant is occasionally found as garden escape and seen by roadside.

Yes, this is true.
Another clue is found in Fl of Mah by Dr Almeida who gives a fairly wide distribution for A. gangetica and says that A. chelonoides is only found in cultivation.

Asystasia gangetica

Yes Asystasia gangetica to me too.

Some times the plants with pink tinged flowers are also seen in Mysore.

Thanks a lot … for the quick identification. I suppose there is a lot of variation in this plant since the pictures on the net have flowers in various colours and the leaf also in differing shapes.
Thanks also … for confirmation.

Dear friends, please help me with the name maithaala kaddi in Kannada script.

I think it could be this: ಮೈತಾಲ ಕಡ್ಡಿ. Please validate; and will be very glad to know meaning of maithaala.

Reference: Shodhganga 10 Chapter 4 – Medicinal plants of Tulunadu

You can also add “Maitta balliಮೈತ್ತ ಬಳ್ಳಿ too, another common name of it.

Thanks very much … for this help.

Any meaning of maitta ? It seems to be used in both Kannada as well as Tulu.

Any meaning of ಮೈತ್ತ that you know ?

I tried my best to find the meaning of Mythala kaddi in many of the wikipedias and dictionaries (Tulu, Kannada as well as English). Inspite of my best efforts I could not  get any meaning for the same. Please excuse me.

While compiling names for Hygrophila ringens, I found this name ಮೈತಳ meitala in Tulu-English Dictionary (1886) by Rev. A. Männer
The entry in dictionary says the plant (Ruellia ringens) is used in medicine and purifying salt.
Perhaps, Asystasia gangetica has similar properties.
Thus the name maithala kaddi will be ಮೈತಳ ಕಡ್ಡಿ … ಕಡ್ಡಿ kaddi = small stick, slender rod.

I also checked the net. Your interpretation is correct. Transliteration is also correct.

… must we wonder ?
The Latin name of this plant Aystasia gangetica suggests that the plant is to be found along the river Ganges or in the Gangetic plains … stretching along many regions of India … yet there seems to be no name known in Hindi or Bengali !!

– BTW, Wikipedia says COROMANDEL as one of the common names for this plant which is missing from your list. I imagine why they call it so?

– Coromandel is an English name given to many places … interestingly, most of them along the sea … am sure you know, we have Coromandel coast in the south east side of our peninsula.
At Wikipedia, in the context [Chinese Violet, Coromandel[2] or Creeping Foxglove[3] ] it must be an adjective … thus it would mean either Coromandel Foxglove OR Creeping Foxglove.
It also very well suits one of the synonym – Asystasia coromandeliana… meaning Coromandel Asystasia

I missed on Coromandel Foxglove !! … many thanks, will put it in my notes.

Useful Plants of India (CSIR)  mentions Medday keerai as Tamil name. Plus following information may be useful

Used as pot-herb; tender leaves good source of thiamine; juice of plant administered to children suffering from swellings and rheumatism.

Many thanks … for the Tamil name, will put it into the notes.

Very keen on getting the Hindi and Bengali names of this plant.

more names compiled …

¿ Asystasia gangetica ?
Please validate whether Asystasia gangetica; this is the sole photo, and may not really help in giving much information about the plant. The plant was growing wild in the scrub vegetation. The upper photo is cropped version of the lower one, to help focus on the leaves and slender stem. The habit looks almost like a climber, but I do not recollect much about it.

Date: October 14, 2019 … Altitude range: about 0 – 3 m (0 – 10 feet) asl
Asystasia gangetica  (L.) T.Anderson

we see this in road sides and in the Shibpur Botanical garden in the rainy season

Thank you, … I found these growing in urban scrub … untended area of the resort I was staying.
Also found them along road at many places in Pondicherry.
And recently even at Wayanad, in open scrub forests along roads.

Perhaps escape from gardens.

why should it escape from garden. its a weed, i thought

This plant is native to certain northern parts of India I assume, and in rest of India, it is planted as ornamental in gardens. Thus I consider that it may have escaped.
I do not think native plants would behave like weeds. I do not know whether my assumption is wrong, Hope someone clarifies.
