Identification of Plant : 5 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (3)

Please help to identify the plant.

The photographs are taken on 17 DEC 2017.
It is in the garden of residential society in Bengaluru.
The dried portions seen in photograph are leaves or bracts? These parts look very ornamental hence the query.

The plant you have posted can be Barleria sp. as the dried spiny bracts are visible, a characteristic of many species of this genus..

Thanks, … I was also thinking of the same.

May be Barleria cristata, which have such bracts & is also cultivated.

Barleria cristata

here are mines from Dakpathar GVMN Rest house area

Dak Pathar was in way. it is about 3-4 Km from Vikas Nagar and Herbertpur and 23-24 Kms from Paonta Sahib (HP)

I think these flowers are called Kateri Koranti in Marathi I have seen a lot of them in my childhood Jambhali(purple) koranti, Pandhari (white) koranti , pivali (yellow) koranti and red koranti. The plant when blooms is full of flowers and a real beauty to see.. I thought the purple one is called in english as Barleria involucrata. what is the difference from Barleria cristata?

Yes …, the flowers of two look similar but flower of B. involucrata has a darker centre. In addition the main differences are:
Barleria cristata: Leaves 5-10 cm long; nerves 6-7 pairs; petioles 3-8 mm;flowers in dense spikes; outer sepals 2-3 cm long, spinous
Barleria involucrata: Leaves 10-20 cm long; nerves 8-10 pairs; petiole 1-5 cm; flowers in large terminal panicles; outer sepals 4-5 cm long

Thank you Sirji for the differentiating features . So what I have seen is Barleria cristata

I luckily spotted  a small plant with 2 flowers of Barleria cristata “Alba” and thought of sharing

in the background there is Ipomoea quamoclit …red flowers and very thin leaflets ..on a vine I think…

Yes Both growing wildly. But I quamoclit may be i think Escape, as it was cultivated also there

These can be bracts of some Barleria species with flowers fallen down.

I too reckon that this is persisting calyx as suggested by …

In Barlaria the fruiting calyx stays even after the seed dispersal. In flower the calyx would be green and when in fruit the same would turn to brown.

Then bracts of some Barleria species .

Not bract but calyx (outer pair of calyx are bigger and inner 2 are smaller).

The outer bigger calyx pair looks like bracts. But if you take and inflorescence and see carefully you may see the bracts and 2 bracteoles.

frustrating

I have come to see and expect nice pictures from you

hence the frustration that ….

anyway

lets hope some senior folks can still say what it might be

I cant

Although the bristly margin of the bract is not clear in the picture, it somewhat looks like Barleria cristata.

Could the members of this esteemed group help identify these flowers blooming on a ridge of the Shivalik foothhills, 15 km from Chandigarh, village Kahianwallah, Punjab. Pics taken on November 2, 2019. The height of the plant was less than a couple of inches.

Barleria sp. ? : 5 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (8)

Presenting a Barleria member (I think so), for deliberation.

Is it B. cristata ?
If yes, then is it a recognised cultivar/ variety ?
My daughter bought it last week from a local nursery who claimed to procure it from Pune.
..    ..     ..

Leaves are orbicular and upper surface corrugated, veins depressed, inferior surface has raised prominent veins.

The leaves remind me of African Violets.

Thanks, …, But flowers and bracts/Calyx lobes are typical Barleria !

Thanks, …, for the beautiful images.

See the variations in this (also cultivated) species at Barleria cristata

Sir, I always consult FOI and EFI before I post!

Plant posted by Surajit Koley ji is somewhat closer to my specimen.
Online search does show few images similar to my specimen but further, they do not provide more information.

By the way, that document cited by Koley ji on revision of Barleria in India … it is now available on researchgate for free download.
