ANOCT06/06 Please identify this shrub : 7 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (7)

Family: Celastraceae/ Flacourtiaceae
Date: 25th October 2015
Place: Savandurga, Karnataka

Habit: Shrub
Habitat: Scrub forest on open hill slopes

This was identified by … as a Celastraceae member and could be Maytenus sp.
… suggested that it could belong to Casearia sp./Flacourtia sp. or related species.

Identified as Combretum albidum G.Don by Dr. Robi Jose.
Is this the accepted name or a synonym?

I was way-off in guessing 🙂
Now with the ID known, it looks familiar to me !
Combretum albidum G.Don must be the accepted name; not knowing of any synonym.

Combretum albidum G.Don (1827) is an accepted name with C. ovalifolium Roxb. (1832) as its synonym.  The habit of the species is recorded to be a liana or creeper but you mention this to be a shrub.  More interesting is the fact that the flowers in the plant are subsessile and the stalk subtending the fruits is up to 2 mm long whereas the images posted by you show well developed pedicels.  Thus in my opinion this could be recognized as a distinct entity with varietal status.  If you are able to go back to the locality and collect flowering and fruiting materials (not only photographs), take measurements, further notes on the habit and preserve the collected specimens then we can arrive at a definite conclusion.

I downloaded an image and enlarged the same. Now I find that the pedicels are very short and  in fact it is the unexpanded porton of the calyx tube  which is looking like a continuation of the pedicel and the same prompted me to make the above comments.  Inconvenience caused is regretted,

Combretum albidum from Mumbai :  3 images. 5 posts by 4 authors.
One of the dominant climbers in the mixed-deciduous forest of Mumbai, Combretum albidum has been bristling with flowers in the full sunshine of summer. The flowers turn dark red before falling off. Clicked today morning in Borivali National Park, North Mumbai.

Wonderful pictures! The habitat photo is lovely too, we don’t usually associate such a scene with a chaotic city like Mumbai.

April 2013

i have seen Combretum albidum more commonly in SGNP.
not sure of this being C. micrantha

This looks like Piluki [Combretum ovalifolium] to me. My photographs for comparison are available at these links
C.micrantha is an exotic, a native of W. Africa.

Is C.albidum and C.ovalifolium are same ? C.albidum is known as Piluki and even the photographs from your link are labelled as C.albidum ! Some recent photos from efloraindia’s posts too point towards this one being C.albidum.

Affirmative. My apologies. Meant C.albidum. [C.ovalifolium is a synonym of C.albidum].

Is this Combretum albidum?
Kindly confirm.

I think that the identification is correct.

Negative.

If not Combretum albidum, what could be the id?

It is from Combretaceae. Size can not be determined here.
Is it really a climber or a tree?

A very old picture. Can’t remember clearly but pods were not more than an inch.
I hope it helps.

Please do not worry about the identity.  I have revised family Combretaceae for Flora of India. I can not  think of any other species.

Climber for ID, Ananthagiri Telengana, TJ-180418-001 : 11 posts by 5 authors. 3 images.
I am new to this group.
I have found this climber in Ananthagiri Forest Reserve in Telengana. Photographed 18 04 2018.
The fruit of the Climber is a lot like the Arjun tree.
Can anyone help me ID it?
I have not taken any field measurements, but approximated sizes are:
fruit : 20-30mm
leaves : 60-90mm

Could it be some Combretum ?

It does look like Combretum albidum, specially in the photograph with new leaf and ripe fruit.
Not sure though, I guess one needs the flower ideally!

It is Combretum albidum (young fruits are red)

Yes, this is Combretum albidum G.Don distributied in Sri Lanka and India.

For me also yes. the ID is correct.

It is Combretum albidum

Combretum nanum @ Khargar Hills, mid-march ’11.

The shots are awesome …

I think this may not be Combretum nanum as per discussions at Id confirmation Combretum nanum

Combretum roxburghii? I will check.

It seems scandent shrub, might be C. roxburghii.

How many wings are there in fruits, 4 or 5?

Appears to be four.

I have now seen the key to the species. Yes, this is Combretum roxburghii.

Four are seen but maybe a fifth on the ar side which is not seen.

In any case, the flowers are 4-merous as well which reveal the identity.

On checking I found that all our observations from South India are placed at Combretum ovalifolium Roxb.
Images appear close to those posted in this thread.
Catalogue of life does not give distribution of Combretum roxburghii Spreng. in South India. I do not know how true it is.
Flora of peninsular India gives its distribution in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.

Thank you for pointing this out.
Now I have got it clarified that the present images are indeed of Combretum ovalifolium Roxb. ex G. Don, characterized by 4-merous flowers and fruits. Combretum roxburghii Spreng. is different and distinct in the 5-merous flowers and fruits. Sorry for the inconveniences caused.

MS/ID/MAR/ 2021/1 ID of the tree: 4 images.
Please ID the tree. Photographed in Chennai. Suggested ID Combretum sps (C. albidum ???)

Combretum albidum var. albidum G. Don. ??

Yes … I am going with your I.D.

I assume that the flowers and fruits are 4-merous. If yes, then the suggested identity is correct. However, as regards the nomenclature, it is found that Chakrabarty & Gangopadhyay in J., Econ. Taxon. Bot. 21: 301. 1997 treated Combretum albidum G. Don (1827) and cited C. ovalifolium Roxb. ex G. Don (1827) as its synonym. It is now found that Wight & Arn., Prodr. Fl. Ind. Orient. 1: 317. 1834 first united the two species under C. ovalifolium, followed by later workers. Hence, as per Art. 11.5 of the Code, the correct name of the plant will be Combretum ovalifolium Roxb. ex G.Don.
