The global distribution of this species includes tropical Africa (Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Botswana, Swaziland, South Africa, Cape Verde, Comoros and Madagascar), the Middle East (Israel, Lebanon, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia), tropical and temperate Asia (Sri Lanka, India, Indochina) and northern Australia. It has apparently been introduced to Florida as well as the Leeward and Windward Isles (The Board of Trustees of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew 2012).
This species is commonly found growing on moist and shady places, on alluvial mud, on the margins of ponds, lakes, streams and river beds.

Hindi name: Motha patera.
Sonepat, 4th April 09 in a marshy patch.
