This Euphorbia was shot and collected along road in Pantnagar.
It is a perennial herb and typically have no nectary glands on involucral cup. It seems Euphorbia heterophylla only Euphorbia heterophylla. Thank you … for the ID. Euphorbia heterophylla The leaf margin contains minute teeth, this is the feature of Euphorbia dentata This seems to be E. heterophylla. Please check with the description of the species in Flora of India, vol. 23 All those who send photographs of plants for identification should understand that however expert a person is, he cannot definitely come to the correct identity of the plant by just seeing the photograph. Even if he is familiar with that species and has seen it several times live or as herbarium specimens, he can only tentatively point out the possibility of its identity. There may be some characters which are not evident in the photograph which may indicate a different identification. There is also possibility of introduction of exotic species which he may not have seen before. There is also the possibility of two species now treated separately, one from India and another from a foreign country, may by comparative study turn out to be a single species. Thanks … for that important note for some of the members who may not be aware of this.

Nepali Name : मैतुला झार Maitula Jhaar DV :: 16APR11 – 0544 :: Euphorbia ¿ species ?: Not sure if this plant too is grown as an ornamental. – Euphorbia heterophylla. – … on taking a look at Google images, the mature plants seem to have very broad and wavy-margined (that is, in the plane of leaf surface). – May be that is why it has been named as ‘heterophylla‘, I think. I understand that the leaves here are variable in shape and size. But I used to get confused with the specific epithet ‘heterophylla’ to a different plant, E.cyathophora, which has two-colored leaf-like bracts. Their nomenclature is still confusing! – .. heterophylla answers many doubts regarding what is seen in Google images. Many thanks for making me realize the confusing relation between heterophylla and cyathophora Euphorbia heterophylla auct. N. Amer. synonym of Euphorbia cyathophora Murray … syn. Poinsettia cyathophora (Murray) Klotzsch & Garcke http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/npgs/html/taxon.pl?429414 – E. heterophylla was earlier popularly known as E. geniculata. Euphorbia for ID : 030811 : AK-1: information about this plant.: Euphorbia geniculata New correct name is Euphorbia heterophylla L. All green poinsettia in India growing by the road side or in your well tended garden plots are volunteers…. ie mexican plant gone wild /// weedy in India… I have photographed some in one well tended turmeric plot one summer at the Hort, Calcutta. Will post when I find them…

I took these photographs while i was on a train! swbiodiversity Another of the PL480 weed invading rice and wheat fields ???
Yes, …, i remember PL480. I have noticed that these plants are very common in garden and unused agri-land, specially beside rail-tracks. I forgot to add that Bengal Plants features this plant. So, it may not be PL480. But it is interesting that in “Bengal Plants” E geniculata Ortega and E. heterophylla L. are different species. …: the reason I thought of pl480, its seems to be very common in texas etc where pl480 wheat was sourced from… but if Bengal plants has it listed, it was perhaps one of those seeds that came with human migration across the seas or the continental terrestrial migration of humans or cattle… who knows may be it went the other way around…ie went from tropics of asia to the tropical climes of north american continent … amazing… there has to be a special branch of anthropology that deals with these questions? One needs to read a lot to reply you! And i think you knew it beforehand, i mean, E. geniculata.
Usually “Bengal Plants” always draws reference of each species from FI and FBI. In this case the book doesn’t equate the two taxa E. geniculata and E. heterophylla with FI. The former taxon finds its source from FBI, vol5,p239.
Page 239 of 5th vol. of FBI states, “The American E. geniculata …… is both cultivated in gardens and has been found apparently wild, but no doubt as an escape…”
Please do not write to Smithsonian, they are likely to laugh at me. Ok, …, its not just modern escapee from the garden that I was wondering about!!! OOnly … can face your bouncers, may be a few other members too. In history book i read Alexander the Great exported Indian elephants. Did they survive?
And may be crops like maize, cotton went east to west in those ancient days.
Surely modern day Europe or America won’t allow weeds, or even crops. And if ancient weeds did ever survive in new world they surely got terminated in 20th century. You know this article – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerica. Isn’t it?
A am facing pavilion with a big duck 😀 There would be plenty of them, thanks craze of Americans for plants. If not gradual migration there are plenty in cultivation, often neglected and running wild. A search of Bailey 26 pages (out of 1030 pages) yielded 12 names. California I found one state which has plants from all parts of World. Dosakai cucumber, hard to find here in Delhi is found most stores in California, and reportedly grown by many farmers.
