Very nice… in the 70s  one could not go thru the maze of Atlanta airport without encountering ( and succumbing to ) potted cotton seed and peanut seed, hoping they will grow in your northern apartment and cheer you up in winter   !!!!
Most often failed, but I got them to bloom sometimes, even the peanuts…

Yes,it is Gossypium hirsutum L. provided mature flower shows evenly placed five dark violet coloured spots near the base of staminal coloum which can be clearly seen by naked eyes.

Photograph of flower appears to be young.

Thanks to you and … for the id.

I will take more pictures of the flower when I revisit the place.

This should be Gossypium hirsutum L.
Why? Epicalyx segments laciniate, Leaves palmilobed, stamens loosely arranged on small staminal column.

… of diploid and tetraploid – indiantreepix | Google Groups : 3 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (1)

… while searching for Gossypium hirsutum on the internet, found lot of matter that enlightened me … for instance, there are only four species among 42 which are cultivated, rest being of wild nature … the four namely G. arboreum, G. herbaceum, G. hirsutum and G. barbadense.

The first two species are diploid … and are native of old world … the last two are tetraploid … referred to as New world cottons.
G. hirsutum is the predominant species, which alone contributes about 90% to the global production.
… interesting reading at http://www.kapasindia.com/TMCOnline/root/common/GeneralCottonCul.asp
Attached is a 17 MAY 09 photo shot at a villager’s backyard in Yeoor Hills, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Thane, showing a burst cotton pod.
Would it tell us whether it belongs to diploid and tetraploid plant ?

Cotton plant on the terrace – indiantreepix | Google Groups : 2 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (7)

This is cotton growing on our terrace farm. One of my most favourite plants. A hit with children visiting us.
We got 500 gms cotton off two plants over a period of six months.
However wish to know the details of this particular cotton. ID help please. is this variety the same? as given in link below?
GM cotton is now grown on 42% of the cotton area in India! This makes India the country with the largest area of GM cotton in the world. What is the need? Pl see….http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton
“The poison on the platter” a documentary by Mahesh Bhatt on ill effects of GM food describe the horrors of GM cotton being grown. resulting in toxic allergies to not only farmers but also the cattle and goats grazing in these fields. The goats grazing in these feilds died with their intestines shrivelled after grazing in these lands.
These two saplings were grown experimentaly on the terrace. Now we have planted ten plants for documenting the yield.
These are grown organically and have given fantastic yeilds without any pests!
If it can be done on a terrace in a concrete jungle, why not on our farms?

Malvaceae week 09 05 2011 UD 004 Ban Kapas Thespesia lampas Jungli Paras Piplo Kolkata 08:   This is a new plant for me… never knew cotton plants would go on and on for years… this one does apparently… look at its stem… its about 8 – 9 inches in diameter… I always thought cotton plants were a yearly affair… may be the agricultural pathos had brainwashed me/us…
This was in a well tended herbal Garden … for demonstration purposes to Ethnomedicine and other students..

This specimen was about 9-10 feet tall, grew kinda straight up, had a few flowers, I went in 4 pm , so the flowers were closing, but the petal color was still beautiful pink… and a few pods high up had opened up to reveal the cotton. The leaves were varied in size… largest were 7-8 inches long.

In my childhood we had a cotton plant in our garden, I do not know the genus and sps. But it was called as Dev kapus.
The cotton balles have seeds inside. In one variety all seeeds are joined togather to form one bundle. This is considered as good cotton?
While the second one has its seeds seperate. For seperating the seeds the first one is better, Because cleaning is easy.
we use to make the battis in lamps from this cotton. the plant was there atleast for 10 to 11 years as per my memory. We use to cut it to keep the proper height so that we can remove the cotton. One day it fail in rain

the plant posted is not Thespesia lampas … from the look of first image Banakapas 1 – though not sure, could be some species of Gossypium.

I too had a Dev kapus plant at my home in my childhood. We too used the cotton to make vaatis. It used to get lovely yellow flowers. We used to wait for the pod to burst open and the cotton to come out. But there was competition with sparrows for the cotton as they used it to line their nests. I have not seen this dev kapus plant for years now. I tried to get one from the nursery but it was not available

You mentioned about Mangalagauri and patris that reminded me of Aghada which we used to make malas for Jivati . I have not seen this plant for years . Anyone has any pictures?

We also had a lot of plants and trees like Bel, Adulsa, Gavati chaha, Korphad, Aghada and Dhotra which I do not get to see anymore. It is a pity.

I think … is right. Could be a species of Gossypium.
G.arboreum?

I think Gossypium hirsutum L. as per images herein due to laciniate epicalyx segments.

For me the ID is O.K.
