Most often failed, but I got them to bloom sometimes, even the peanuts…

Yes,it is Gossypium hirsutum L. provided mature flower shows evenly placed five dark violet coloured spots near the base of staminal coloum which can be clearly seen by naked eyes.

Found this cotton plant growing in wild, in Jaipur, on 06.11.11. The plant was abt 3 feet tall ,with few leaves and no flowers.

The first two species are diploid … and are native of old world … the last two are tetraploid … referred to as New world cottons.
G. hirsutum is the predominant species, which alone contributes about 90% to the global production.

We got 500 gms cotton off two plants over a period of six months.

“The poison on the platter” a documentary by Mahesh Bhatt on ill effects of GM food describe the horrors of GM cotton being grown. resulting in toxic allergies to not only farmers but also the cattle and goats grazing in these fields. The goats grazing in these feilds died with their intestines shrivelled after grazing in these lands.
These two saplings were grown experimentaly on the terrace. Now we have planted ten plants for documenting the yield.
These are grown organically and have given fantastic yeilds without any pests!
If it can be done on a terrace in a concrete jungle, why not on our farms?

Attachments (3) please identify this plant. the shots were taken at Green House, Botanical Garden, Warsaw. don’t they label their plants inside the green house? levels in half of the plants here are either missing or hidden among the foliage. And the origin of the plant in question was impossible to find out. It was hanging from the ceiling. Malvaceae week 09 05 2011 UD 004 Ban Kapas Thespesia lampas Jungli Paras Piplo Kolkata 08: This is a new plant for me… never knew cotton plants would go on and on for years… this one does apparently… look at its stem… its about 8 – 9 inches in diameter… I always thought cotton plants were a yearly affair… may be the agricultural pathos had brainwashed me/us…
This specimen was about 9-10 feet tall, grew kinda straight up, had a few flowers, I went in 4 pm , so the flowers were closing, but the petal color was still beautiful pink… and a few pods high up had opened up to reveal the cotton. The leaves were varied in size… largest were 7-8 inches long. In my childhood we had a cotton plant in our garden, I do not know the genus and sps. But it was called as Dev kapus. the plant posted is not Thespesia lampas … from the look of first image Banakapas 1 – though not sure, could be some species of Gossypium. I too had a Dev kapus plant at my home in my childhood. We too used the cotton to make vaatis. It used to get lovely yellow flowers. We used to wait for the pod to burst open and the cotton to come out. But there was competition with sparrows for the cotton as they used it to line their nests. I have not seen this dev kapus plant for years now. I tried to get one from the nursery but it was not available You mentioned about Mangalagauri and patris that reminded me of Aghada which we used to make malas for Jivati . I have not seen this plant for years . Anyone has any pictures?
We also had a lot of plants and trees like Bel, Adulsa, Gavati chaha, Korphad, Aghada and Dhotra which I do not get to see anymore. It is a pity.

This should be Gossypium hirsutum L. as per images herein. Thank you … I will correct. It used to be cultivated in my area nearly 30 years ago. Now replaced by New World species.

I thought it to be Gossypium herbaceum.

This Gossypium species is from Senapati district, Manipur This is cultivated variety of local origin. I request you to identify the species It should be Gossypium hirsutum L. as per images and details herein.
