Hindi is Mustaru, sorry for mistake in copying

I think many Bengali plant names owe their origin in Sanskrit or in other vernacular languages. Even we cannot overrule the influences of Portugese, Spanish, French etc, who once colonised Bengal. I have heard that names of many places in West Bengal have such origin, albeit with some BANGALI twist!

Last night while going to bed it occurred to me that we have lost many regional Bengali words that once were of common use. Any many words have got their meanings quite changed. AAJKAAL, a Bengali Daily, often features these Bengali words.

I have made a mistake in my last mail regarding the meaning of Bengali names of plant species. I wrote that to find meanings of Bengali names we might take help from lexicon of older days. I mentioned about two dictionaries, one by Rajsekhar Basu and the another one, called KARIKA.
KARIKA is not a lexicon, rather it is a book that contain info on family tree (genealogy). It is NIRUKTA what i wanted to mention for the source of Bengali meanings.

To me it looks G.maderaspatana (L) Poir. (Asteraceae) too! It blooms profusely, probably here it has just started flowering. However, the achene (cypsela) visible in the first pic are not of this species.
