… namuti at ENVIS – FRLHT But… don’t know what this word ‘NAMUTI’ means in Bengali : (Chances of a typo cannot be overruled – and it can make a lot of difference). I have no idea what the word Namuti means in Bengali but searching paper
it seems at least the possibility of a typo can be overruled . I think many Bengali plant names owe their origin in Sanskrit or in other vernacular languages. Even we cannot overrule the influences of Portugese, Spanish, French etc, who once colonised Bengal. I have heard that names of many places in West Bengal have such origin, albeit with some BANGALI twist! I think you are quite correct, most of the common Bengali plant names has lot to do with Sanskrit origin. You will meet me at this time of the day quite often because
Last night while going to bed it occurred to me that we have lost many regional Bengali words that once were of common use. Any many words have got their meanings quite changed. AAJKAAL, a Bengali Daily, often features these Bengali words.
One of my ex-colleagues said, “…If you want to learn meanings of Bengali words do consult lexicon of older days, like one by Rajsekhar Basu, or better a lexicon named KARIKA…”, if i remember him correctly. I can surely provide you with the Bengali script of “Namuti” [Beng = নামুতি] I have made a mistake in my last mail regarding the meaning of Bengali names of plant species. I wrote that to find meanings of Bengali names we might take help from lexicon of older days. I mentioned about two dictionaries, one by Rajsekhar Basu and the another one, called KARIKA.
KARIKA is not a lexicon, rather it is a book that contain info on family tree (genealogy). It is NIRUKTA what i wanted to mention for the source of Bengali meanings. . … etymology of Grangea genus: … the context is Grangea maderaspatena (typo in my post) Cilacap Asteraceae: This is Grangea maderaspatana from Asteraceae….
