… Gujarati name for Grangea maderaspatana:
The name for Grangea maderaspatana (L.) POIR is given as zinki mundi in Biological Diversity of Gujarat http://www.gec.gov.in/Gecweb/BiologicalDiversityCon… [PDF ]
Is ઝિંકી મુંડી properly spelt ?

Useful Plants of India lists Jhinkimundi (similar to given above) and nahanigorakhamundi as Gujarati names for this plant.
Others include
Hindi: Mussaru, mukhatari
Beng: Namuti
Mar: Mashipatri
Tel: Save, mustaru
Tam: Masipathri
Kan: Davana
Mal: Nilampala
Bihar: Bhediachim, bichi ba

Will need to check on the Hindi name Mussaru and Malayalam name Nilampala.
… they are slightly varying at ENVIS –
FRLHT <http://envis.frlht.org/plant_details.=2595>
At JKHealthworld <http://www.jkhealthworld.com/detail.php?id=4866> the names in different languages are put in Devanagari.

Hindi is Mustaru, sorry for mistake in copying
Malayalam is same Nilampala in this book

Gujarati-knowing friends, my query is yet pending for knowing whether ઝિંકી મુંડી is correctly spelt.

namuti at ENVIS – FRLHT

But… don’t know what this word ‘NAMUTI’ means in Bengali :

(Chances of a typo cannot be overruled – and it can make a lot of difference).
Hoping dear … would validate it.

I have no idea what the word Namuti means in Bengali but searching paper
it seems at least the possibility of a typo can be overruled .

I think many Bengali plant names owe their origin in Sanskrit or in other vernacular languages. Even we cannot overrule the influences of Portugese, Spanish, French etc, who once colonised Bengal. I have heard that names of many places in West Bengal have such origin, albeit with some BANGALI twist!

I think you are quite correct, most of the common Bengali plant names has lot to do with Sanskrit origin. You will meet me at this time of the day quite often because

Last night while going to bed it occurred to me that we have lost many regional Bengali words that once were of common use. Any many words have got their meanings quite changed. AAJKAAL, a Bengali Daily, often features these Bengali words.
One of my ex-colleagues said, “…If you want to learn meanings of Bengali words do consult lexicon of older days, like one by Rajsekhar Basu, or better a lexicon named KARIKA…”, if i remember him correctly.

I can surely provide you with the Bengali script of “Namuti” [Beng = নামুতি]

I have made a mistake in my last mail regarding the meaning of Bengali names of plant species. I wrote that to find meanings of Bengali names we might take help from lexicon of older days. I mentioned about two dictionaries, one by Rajsekhar Basu and the another one, called KARIKA.
KARIKA is not a lexicon, rather it is a book that contain info on family tree (genealogy). It is NIRUKTA what i wanted to mention for the source of Bengali meanings.

.

… etymology of Grangea genus:
Would like to know the derivation of the genus name Grangea.
… my query is in context of Grangea madersapatana (L.) POIR.
Would it be named after someone called Grange (known to Addison) … as put in The Encyclopaedic dictionary; an original work of reference to the words in the English language, giving a full account of their origin, meaning, pronunciation, and use … http://www.archive.org/stream/1924091757025_djvu.txt
Forgive my naivety, but do not know Grange nor Addison
OR would the name be based on the word grange, meaning an outlying farm.

… the context is Grangea maderaspatena (typo in my post)

Thanks … for your keen observation. Yes it was patch of land with mixture of different species many of them were blumea…. somehow I have not dared to search the ID of them though I have some collection of photographs.
