This ornamental tall herb was photographed from Fremont in California, growing about 2 m tall.
Please help in choosing between H. flavum and H. flavescens.

dont know. people who have been dealing in them for a long time are themselves confess to be confused, see the answer by the Tallahassee guy (GingersRus(Tallahassee z8B) ) and he has two pages:

by a very interesting guy
http://www.gingersrus.com/cart/index.php?aux_page=aux1
ps same as the Tallahassee guy (GingersRus(Tallahassee z8B) )
so how do we separate them?
beats me

efi page on Hedychium flavescens

The major differences between two is as follows
Characters var. flavum var. flavescens
Lamina 26-37.5 cm long, green or hyaline hairy below 46-50.5 cm long, golden yellow hairy below
Flower length 12.5-13 cm    15.3-15.6 cm
Calyx length 3.3-3.5 cm    4.2-4.4 cm
Corolla tube length 7.9-8 cm    9-9.1 cm
Dorsal corolla lobe length 3.7-3.8 cm   4.8-4.9 cm
Lateral staminodes 3.9-4.1 x 1.4-1.5 cm    5-5.1 x 1.6-1.8 cm
Labellum 3.8-4 x 3.3-3.6 cm    5-5.2 x 4-4.2 cm
Stamen length 4.3-4.5 cm    5.5-5.8 cm
Filament length 3.3-3.4 cm    4.7-4.8 cm

Based on flower size, inflorescence and leaves I go with H. flavescens.
