The calyx has glandular trichomes (hairs), which secrete a sticky mucilage that is capable of trapping and killing insects; it is unclear what the purpose of these trichomes is; protection from pollination by way of “crawlers” (ants and other insects that typically do not transfer pollen between individual plants), or possible protocarnivory. Can be cultivated as a hedge plant and roots can be harvested after 2 years and supplied to drug manufacturers nice but aren’t the flowers supposed to be light blue? Blue colored one is Plumbago capensis, which is an ornamendal plant and not used in native medicine.
